Abstract Observations of moving solar system objects in POS mode with the FGSs have the potential of improving the angular accuracy of such measurements by an order of magnitude over ground-based measurements. Such measurements would provide the most accurate plate scale determination for HST, as well as improve the determination of the motions of such objects for both orbital and solar system gravity field determinations. The first attempt at the Plate Scale measurement failed to acquire fine lock on the minor planet and reference stars because of a shortening of the Course Track walkdown to the point where the Interferometer transfer function of the FGS was missed entirely. This observation is designed to demonstrate the ability of the FGS to lock onto an asteroid with Fine Lock, and track it, using only two orbits of GTO time allocated by the AST for Minor Planet work already. Description of proposed observations. Observations will be made with the FGSs in POS mode. 1 Obs group will consist of one observation of the minor planet followed by two reference stars. (3min/mpobs,1min/ref-star) The FES-time will be changed from one group to the next. The orbits include redundancy incase of LOL. The first orbit will test 0.2 and 0.4 second FES times. The second orbit will test 0.4 and 0.8 second FES times. If both orbits succeed we will be able to determine the plate scale. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. This observation is preparatory to the Solar System Astrometry GTO program. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. This observation is time critical, based on asteroid size, magnitude, speed and direction of motion through the pickle, reference and guidestar availability, and many other factors. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans.
