Abstract This work is to observe interstellar oxygen and carbon within 1 kpc of the sun.The goal is to measure the gas phase abundaces of these species, the densities and temperatures within the clouds, the amount of CO, the electron densities, and the mean intensity of the ultraviolet radiation field. Description of proposed observations. The observations will be in the echelle and G160M modes to acquire very high signal to noise measurements of weak, narrow interstellar lines. In particular, we will observe the weak, forbidden lines of O I and C II, and additional lines of CO. Very high signal to noise ratios are required because the lines are weak and because there are several clouds in essentially every line of sight. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. Ultraviolet observations are impossible from the ground. The previous Copernicus and IUE observations had inadequate spectral resolution and signal to noise. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Data reduction will be performed using the HRS software at Goddard or, if possible, the software will be transported to UCLA. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10. Resources to be supplied by investigator's institution(s). UCLA can provide VAX and SUN computers and extensive experience with reducing IUE data. We have an efficient departmental computer center for data reduction facilities. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 13. This work is to observe interstellar C II, CO and O I toward 8 stars within 1 kpc of the sun.
