Abstract This proposal defines a set of PC images of the outer condensations of Eta Carinae which should be made during cycle 3, shortly before the first HST service mission. These images should be made with the first generation PC. This proposal uses the balance of the GTO Augmentation time granted to the Eta Carinae project. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Description of proposed observations. Line 100 PC image with F658N filter, with Eta Carinae positioned and oriented to place all of the outer conden- sations in the field of view. The bright core is positioned near the edge of PC6 to prevent any blooming from spoiling more than a small local region of the entire image. The orientation will prevent any of the condensations from being split between two chips. Line 110 PC image with same position and orientation as line 100, but with filter F675W to allow detection of fainter astrometric reference stars, fainter knots of ejecta and subtle structures barely visible in our cycle 0 images. Line 120 K SPOT calibration images to allow proper alignment of the four PC fames. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. Spatial resolution needed to study inner core and small scale structures in Homunculus, and to measure displacements and proper motions of outwardly moving ejecta. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. Orientation requested for PC images will allow all of the condensations to be detected in the PC field of view without being spoiled by blooming from the central object or split between two chips. The specified orientation is highly desireable. However, if it is not possible to schedule the exposures during cycle 3, the orientation requirement may be waived. We request that these exposures be made with the existing PC I prior to its removal during the service mission. A separate proposal has been submitted which defines similar exposures to be made with the PC camera of the WFPC II. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. The individual images will be flat-fielded, registered and combined to eliminate cosmic ray hits, bad columns and pixels, and other cosmetic defects. The KSPOT frames will be used to align and join the four PC chips. The stars visible on the wider filter frames will be used to establish the astrometric reference grid. The primary objective is to establish a baseline for long term monitoring of the proper motions of the ejecta. Other objectives are to characterize the number and size distribution of the individual knots, and to search for fainter and more distant ejecta. Page 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. Description of previous HST work. An early set of WFC and PC images were obtained in cycle 0 as part of GTO proposal 1186. Our preliminary analyses were described in the proceedings of the STScI workshop on mass loss, and in a poster paper at the Atlanta AAS meeting in January, 1992. Further results on the motions of the North Condensation were presented at the Madison ASP conference in June, 1992, and at the HST workshop in Sardinia in July, 1992. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10.
