Scientific Justification. We propose to obtain parallel observations with the WFC and the V and I filters when the primary observation is at low galactic latitude. Most of the stars in the fields will be distant giants and A-F dwarfs, but a sizable number are expected to be very low mass "starlets" within 100 pc, with absolute visual magnitudes less than ~ 17. Such stars will be very red and targets will be identified on the basis of V-I color. From the observational data summarized by Poveda and Allen (1985), there should be two such stars per WFC frame. As the mass spectrum and luminosity function for such stars is unknown, the parallel observations will provide important constraints on theories of star formation and the local mass density. The angular resolution of the WFC allows a search for extended shells around late type giants and can be used to constrain mass loss rates from these stars. We expect to use these data to search for close visual binaries among field stars. This allows a study of binary frequency on scales larger than spectroscopic binaries, but smaller than those resolvable from the ground. Finally, these observations should result in many serendipitous discoveries. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. A set of sequences is constructed to fit within exposure opportunities of varying lengths, beginning with single orbit exposures. On long exposure opportunities, the aim is to obtain very deep images by concentrating on the F785LP and F555W filters. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. This is a parallel program designed to increase the scientific productivity of the HST by acquiring data relevant for studying cool stars, and the interstellar medium when the HST is busy but the WFPC is not. The exposure time is determined by the primary exposure time and the ability of the planning and scheduling system to match parallel exposures to primary exposures. Enough exposures are included to provide good chances for matches. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Data reduction and analysis plans. Data will undergo standard data reduction. Cosmic rays will be removed and multiple exposures in the same field will be stacked. The data will be visually inspected in the hopes of making serendipitous discoveries. Stars will be identified and candidates for low mass stars and close binaries will be determined. Star counts and luminosity functions will be constructed. Results will be applied to the formation and evolution of low mass stars, mass loss rates of late type giants, and the frequency of close binaries. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8.
