Abstract This proposal has several objectives. First, the imaging data will be used to determine the precise positions of the centers of the galaxies, to see if the central region is bright enough to do long slit spectroscopy with the FOC f/48 spectrograph, and finally to study the radial intensity and color profile in the spectral region between 2200A and 4500A. In addition, f/288 data will be obtained in those few cases where it is warranted by the f/96 exposures. The spectroscopy will be attempted only in the cases where the central region is bright enough to determine a good velocity dispersion. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Description of proposed observations. Two images are taken of each galaxy with single exposures in each of F342W and F502M, with both exposures being grouped together with a GROUP NO GAP special requirement. There may be some concern as to whether Neutral Density filters are needed in some cases. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 12. 64% of the observing time for this project is to be charged to P. Crane's guaranteed time. 36% of the observing time for this project is to be charged to I.R. King's guaranteed time. The observing sequences may have to be modified to include neutral density filters depending on the initial exposures. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 13.
