Abstract A newly discovered optical synchrotron jet in 3C264 offers a unique opportunity to map the polarization and spectral index along the length of the jet. Since only 5 optical synchrotron jets are known, detailed studies of the known jets are important to begin to understand this complex phenomenon. Indeed, the crucial questions for understanding the jet phenomenon remain unanswered. For example, are jets radiation beam or particle beams\? Are the radiating electrons accelerated locally where we see them in the optical, or are they tranported loss-free from the nucleus\? What is the confinement mechanism\? Polarization measurements are proposed to confirm the strong circumstantial evidence for the synchrotron emission from the jet. Spectral index measurements along the length of the jet will reveal details of the energy transport if the jet fits the standard scenarios. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Description of proposed observations. The Near UV Objective Prism will be used with the HST rotated to the appropriate position angle so the jet is perpendicular to the prism dispersion to provide a low dispersion spatially resolved spectrum of this jet. Since the jet is essentially unresolved perpendicular to its length, the spectrum will be relatively easy to interprete and will thus provide a good measure of the spectral index along the jet. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. The jet to be studied is only 0.6 arcsec long. The proposed observations take full advantage of the unique capabities of the FOC and of HST. In particular, the high spatial resolution coupled with the UV sensitivity will be exploited. Given the FOC spatial resolution of 22 milli-arcsec, the objective prism will include about 30 pixels along the jet in the brighter regions. This type of spatial resolution, needed to study the details of the spectral index along the jet, cannot be achieved with any but HST. The polarization measurements also require HST resolution. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Although the reduction of this sort of data is not simple, we are in close contact with Peter Jakobsen who is THE expert on reducing these data. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9.
