Scientific Category 3. Proposal For 4. Proposal Type 5. Continuation ID STELLAR ASTROPHYSICS GTO/HSP 1098 Sub Category ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Principal Investigator Institution Country Telephone Robert C. Bless WISCONSIN, UNIVERSITY OF USA (608)262-1715 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Abstract In this proposal we will search for a remnant star associated with SN1987A. Once detected, we will study the photometric variability in an attempt to place important constraints on the mechanisms by which neutron stars originate. Description of proposed observations. A search for the remnant star associated with SN1987A will be conducted. We will use the 6.0" finding aperture on the POL tube. An observation will be made every 6 months until the pulsar is detected. Each observation will be searched for pulsations using FFT methods. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. Remnant stars are known from presently available upper limits on most SNR central stars to be fainter than V = 20; HST is required for this proposal for the following reasons: (a) Scintillation does not contaminate the data and hence pulses in the remnant star will be easier to detect. (b) Smaller apertures can be used with HST minimizing the contamination from the background. (c) A long passband (1600-7000 A) can be used which will maximize the number of photons detected. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. The HSP wide bandwidth photometric observations of SN1987A will be analyzed by power spectrum analysis methods to determine if any pulsation exists (as it does in the Crab Nebula and 1E2259+586). Photometric observations will also be analyzed for longer periodicities which may be present in the light curve. The results will be applied to determining the location, geometry, and motion of the emitting regions. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
