Abstract This proposal is for the continuation of an approved longterm project to monitor atmospheric and surface changes on the planet Mars. The first segment of this project was successfully completed during Cycle 0. During that cycle Mars was observed on five different dates using a variety of WFPC filters and on two occasions using FOS spectral scans. Except for one set of targets which fell partially off of the chip, all of the data have been excellent. Initial analyses confirm the potential value of HST observations for identifying phenomena on Mars for the entire range of angular sizes encountered during its synodic cycle. Mars will be outside of the 50 degree elongation limit for essentially all of Cycle 2. This period includes a large portion of the classic dust storm season on Mars, and frequent monitoring of the two primary regions of dust activity is proposed for that period. Observing strategy also includes repeat coverage of (martian) dates monitored during Cycle 0; comparison of data collected on identical seasonal dates in two consecutive (martian) years will constrain interannual variations in surface albedos and atmospheric phenomena. Finally, the Cycle 2 observations include the 1993 opposition of Mars when global maps in several different wavelengths are proposed. Data will help provide the context for the Mars Observer Mission. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. Scientific Justification. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. The orbit of Mars is such that its elongation exceeds 50 degrees for about one half of its 26 month synodic cycle. In the version of this proposal which was originally approved for three cycles, Mars fell outside the 50 degree interdict for about six months per cycle. With the redefinition of cycles, Mars is unobservable during almost all of Cycles 1 and 3, but it is observable for all of Cycle 2. Therefore, this Cycle 2 proposal collects the observations in our original proposal from Cycles 2 and 3. The Cycle 2 observations can be broken down into four major groups: 1. Dust storm monitoring sequences designed to detect and study local and global scale dust activity on Mars. These sequences are scheduled every ten days and alternately monitor the two principal areas of dust activity on the planet. Targets are 21-31. 2. Sequences which provide coverage of Mars at identical seasonal dates to sequences during Cycle 0. These are designed to study interannual variability on the planet. Coverage which repeats the coverage acquired during the 1990 opposition is contained in targets 41,42, and 43. Later Cycle 0 coverage is repeated in targets 51-54. 3. Observation of Mars at its maximum angular diameter during the 1993 opposition. This includes sequences 44-47. 4. Images of Mars during summer in the northern hemisphere, a season not available during Cycle 0, obtained on targets 55 and 56. Cycle 0 Primary Hours: 0.5 Parallel Hours: 0 Exposures: 57 Cycle 1 Primary Hours: 0 Parallel Hours: 0 Exposures: 0 Cycle 2 Primary Hours: 0.89 Parallel Hours: 0 Exposures: 95 Cycle 3 Primary Hours: 0 Parallel Hours: 0 Exposures: 0 Cycle 4 Primary Hours: 0 Parallel Hours: 0 Exposures: 0 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. Images of Mars which have sufficient surface resolution to be scientifically useful can be acquired using ground based telescopes only for a few months around oppositions. HST can provide scientifically useful images of the planet when the planet is at its minimum angular diameter of about 4 arc secs. (This has been established by our Cycle 0 observations at 4.8 arc secs.) In principal HST could monitor seasonal phenomena on Mars for the entire synodic cycle, but the solar pointing constraint eliminates about 45% of that time from consideration. The 1993 opposition is not especially good, and the angular size of Mars would be sufficiently large for only about two months of scientifically useful ground based observations. HST will be able to observe the planet profitably for thirteen months. Page 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. These observations are all time critical because they are to occur at specified dates on Mars in order to maximize the size of the planet or in order to repeat coverage from a prior year. In addition, the observations are to be targeted as closely as possible to specified central meridians on Mars in order to observed particular surface features or particular sites of atmospheric activity. Therefore, since the period of Mars is close to 24 hours, only one orbit per day will generally be suitable. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. We need valid flat fields for the various WFPC filters selected for PC6, the chip of choice during Cycle 0, and well exposed stars for PSF's. The latter should be of known spectral type so that they can be used for photometric calibration; known solar type stars would be best. Though these are not exceptional requirements, some of these data were missing for our Cycle 0 observations. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. All of the members of our team either have their own workstations running IRAF or have access to same. In the case of special problems, we might turn to STScI for data processing assistance. But we should have sufficient experience with the data analysis at this point to cope with most of it at our home institutions. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Additional comments or special requests. We are contemplating submission of a Target of Opportunity proposal to perform additional observations of a global dust storm if such is detected by our planned monitoring sequences. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. Description of previous HST work. Programs 3103 and 3107, which are the first part of this long term proposal, have been successfully executed during 1990 and 1991. The programs mentioned above have established the value of HST observations for monitoring the martian surface and atmosphere throughout the synodic cycle of the planet. The deconvolved images have been shown to provide resolution at least within a factor of two of that which was anticipated. The program has also established the value of ultra violet imaging of Mars for studying ozone concentrations in the atmosphere as well as for studying the behavior of surface reflectances at short wavelengths. Examination of the initial images has shown the appearance of new albedo features in the Hellas region which have not been previously seen in earth based images. A number of interesting cloud features in the polar regions have also been seen in the images. The FOS data have received only preliminary analysis, which has revealed that the signal to noise for the spectra are what we had expected. An article based on this work has been generated for the HST First Year of Light Workshop Proceedings. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10. Resources to be supplied by investigator's institution(s). The institutions involved are providing funding in terms of data analysis facilities and, in some cases, released time. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
