Abstract This test is designed to perform a check of the FOS aft shroud pressure after the completion of the shuttle portion of the 1993 Servicing mission, and prior to the initial re-activation of either the FOS Red or Blue detector HV. This test is to run with the FOS in LVON mode first on the Blue side and then on the Red side. The ion- gauge will be turned on for a minimum of 2.5 hours on each side until an internal pressure of 1E-5 Torr or less is reached for 12 hours or more. In order to safely operate the FOS high voltage, it is necessary to ensure that the FOS internal pressure is sufficiently low to prevent high voltage coronal discharge. Such discharge could destroy the FOS detectors. Taking FOS pressure measurements with the FOS ION-GUAGE allows the engineers to safely predict when this pressure constraint will be met. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. During each 12 hour period, the FOS low voltage and ION-GUAGE will be turned on for at least 150 minutes to collect pressure information (telemetry point Y338). As a precaution against failures, the ION-GUAGE will be operated using both sides (Blue and then Red) within the 12 hour period. The observations will be spaced apart so if both are successful, the engineers will be able to identify any trends and more easily predict when the pressure criteria will be satisfied. To minimize the transitions within the FOS hardware, the proposal calls for the ION- GUAGE to be turned on just prior to the 150 minutes of data collection and turned off just after. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. This proposal must be sheduled after the FOS has been successfully returned to the HOLD mode (via proposal 4761) from the shuttle portion of the servicing mission. Further lines 11-16 must be repeated every 12 hours until all of the pressure criteria using the FOS ION-GUAGE have been satisfied. (These repeats are done in logsheet lines 21-26, 31-36, etc.) No other FOS activities may be scheduled between lines 11 and 13 and lines 14 and 16 (or their analogs). FOS activities, for which the pressure requirements have been satisfied, may be scheduled between lines 13 and 14 and between 16 and 21 (and their analogs). The point in time, at which each of the pressure criteria using the FOS ION-GUAGE are satisfied, will be defined by the FOS engineer as part of the analysis of the data from this proposal. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
