Scientific Justification. This activity will satisfy the following COSTAR SMOV Requirements: 1. Acquire FOS image data for use in refining the COSTAR/FOS tilt and focus alignments. Acquire aperture maps on both the red and blue channels. 2. Determine new FOS tilt and focus settings. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. The observation sequence will start with an uplink to update the COSTAR FOS mechanism positions 0-4 hours before the FOS data are obtained. An on-board target acquisition will be performed to acquire the target into the FOS 4.3 arcsec aperture. 4.3 arcsec aperture maps will be taken on both the red and blue channels. The images will be analyzed for coma and image quality to determine new FOS M1 focus and tilt positions. The observation sequence will be repeated twice per day for 6 times. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. Prerequisites: 1. FOS-CAL-01 FOS/FGS Coarse Alignment (proposal 4907) Real-time Requirements: Realtime contacts required for COSTAR FOS mechanism position updates. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Science data will be analyzed using the COSTAR/FOS data analysis system. The following analysis will be performed: 1. Calculate the centroid and encircled energy for both images, and generate contour plots. 2. Analyze the image shape and encircled energy to determine the amount of coma and the focus quality. 3. Use the results of step 2 and the COSTAR opto-mechanical model to determine new positions for FOS focus, X tilt, and Y Tilt mechanisms.
