Scientific Justification. This activity will satisfy the following COSTAR SMOV Requirements: 1. Perform GHRS fine focus scan. Take GHRS spectra covering a GHRS M1 focus range of -.5 mm to .5 mm centered on the current best focus position. 2. Determine new GHRS optical focus. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. A 5x5 N2 on-board acquisition will be performed to center the target in the LSA. Return to brightest point will be used. Take standard sequence of image and spectra at setup position and after final return to zero setting to check stability. The GHRS M1 mirror will then be moved to each of the 5 scan points with image and spectra being taken at each point. Each data sequence will consist of the following: 1. Peakup in LSA and LSA IMAGE 2. LSA spectra 3. Slew to SSA and SSA Peakup 4. SSA spectra The scan grid is shown below. Each grid point is labeled with order of the focus scan #. Description of special scheduling requirements. Prerequisites: 1. COSTAR/GHRS Fine Alignment X-Tilt/Y-Tilt (4732) Real-time Requirements: Uplink opportunities to set best positions. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Engineering data will be reduced using the ESS and the COSTAR data analysis system to generate standard sorts and plots. Sorts and plots will be used to: 1. Verify GHRS movements and performance 2. Verify COSTAR electrical performance Science data will be analyzed using the COSTAR/GHRS data analysis system. The following analysis will be performed: 1. Calculate the centroid and encircled energy the image. 2. Calculate the ratio of the SSA to LSA flux for each scan point. Plot the results vs. focus position. 3. Use the results of steps 1 and 2 and the COSTAR opto-mechanical model to determine new positions for the focus, X, and Y Tilt mechanisms. Certain Data Base Updates: 1. None.
