Scientific Category 3. Proposal For 4. Proposal Type 5. Continuation ID ENG Sub Category ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Principal Investigator Institution Country Telephone Dr. Roberto Gilmozzi STSCI USA 301-338-4760 TIB DEPUTY ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Abstract The goals set forth in this test are threefold: to measure (to 50 mas) the relative positions of the Science Instruments, to verify the focal plane plate scale, and, via repetitions of the test, to assess the focal plane and FGS stability. Understanding the focal plane stability is important because it will flag the need for revisions in SI/FGS alignment, it will identify the source of any variations, and it may suggest operational methodology for the post-Servicing era when alignment requirements become more stringent. The test design is compact: stars in an astromertic cluster will be acquired by an SI followed immediately by WFC image. By using the same guide star pair and same roll angle, the relative alignment between each SI and the WFC is easily computed. The FGS portion of the test has some additional goals. ******THIS IS AN IMPLEMENTATION TEST PROPOSAL************** ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. The goals set forth in this test are threefold: to measure the relative positions of the Science Instruments, to verify the focal plane plate scale, and, via repetitions of the test, to assess the focal plane and FGS stability. Understanding the focal plane stability is important because it will flag the need for revisions in SI/FGS alignment, it will identify the source of any variations, and it may suggest operational methodology for the post-Servicing era when alignment requirements become more stringent. Studying the target acquisition miss-distances in order to assess stability and quality of the SI/FGS alignment, does not easily allow global assessment of focal plane stability and, because of guide star/target positional errors, is limited to accuracies of about an arcsec. The accuracy goal of this dedicated test is 50 mas for SI/WFPC calibration. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. Test Description: For the SI portion of the test, each SI will acquire a nearby astrometric cluster star and (for the aperture SIs only) will center it in the target acquisition aperture using onboard TA procedures. Immediately following the acquisition and without moving the telescope, the WFPC will take an image of the cluster stars in its field of view. This pair of activities will be repeated for each SI in turn. The same pair of guides stars and roll angle will be used throughout the SI portion of the test thus eliminating systematic errors. Only small angle manuevers will adjust the vehicle for each SI sequence. For the aperture SIs (FOS,HRS, and HSP), an onboard target acquisition will be performed followed either by a peak-up (FOS) or a map. This second step is necessary since the initial acquisition does not result in the accuracy needed (as large 0.2" for the FOS and HSP). The HSP peak-up procedure is not standard and so a MAP after the target acquisition will have have to suffice. The apertures which will be measured in this way include the following: HRS 2.0 arcsec, FOS RED 4.3 arcsec, (TBD FOS RED), HSP POL 6.0 arcsec, FOC F96 512x1024 zoom (center field), (TBD FOC F48). In order to maximize scheduling efficiency, and satisfy power constraints, the order of SI sequence is specific and is TBD. The FGS portion of the test will consist of 20-30 POS MODE measurements by the astrometry FGS with TBD WFC images (TBS BY ED NELAN?). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. This is an HST alignment diagnostic test and falls under the category of Engineering/Observatory level test. Page 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: THIS TEST CALLS FOR NON-STANDARD COMMANDING AND SCHEDULING *** AN IMPLEMENTATION PLAN REQUIRED. 1. GUIDING REQUIREMENT: Fine Lock for all SI Sequences. 2. GUIDE STAR SELECTION: The SAME guide star pair to be used for all SI sequences; that pair must be OPTIMUM for all SI lines. The guide star pair will be determined in collaboration with the PIs and SPSS. This is non-standard procedure. 3. All SI sequences must be performed AT THE SAME ROLL ORIENTATION in order to minimize systematic roll errors. 4. SEQUENCE NO-GAP scheduling because of stringent pointing requirements, power constraints, and to maintain a steady environment. 5. 32K Engineering - needed for analysis. 6. REPETITIONS: The test will be repeated monthly or bi-monthly. (exact schedule TBD). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. Section 5 outlines in detail the special requirements for this test. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. For the SI portion of the test, the data reduction will consist of the following: From the WFC images, the roll angle and absolute pointing on the sky will be calculated from the astrometic stars in it's field of view. Each SI aperture addressed in the test will be expressed in a WFC coordinate frame in arcsec. A global solution for all SIs can be made because the same guide star pair was used. Relative positions in this frame will be stored for trending. Note that the FGS/SI alignment is not addressed in this first analysis step. In the second analysis step, assumptions about the FGS/FGS alignment will have to be made in order to check the V2V3 calibration of the focal plane. REST TBD at this time. The OMS facility will be used to extract astrometry and telemetry values, existing transformation programs and spreadsheet storage will be used to store and analyze the position data. Existing image processing facilities at the STScI will be used to reduce the WFPC frames and perform plate calibrations. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Additional comments or special requests. This is an alignment assessment test which will be repeated as needed. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. Description of previous HST work. This is an alignment and stability assessment test which will be repeated as needed. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10. Resources to be supplied by investigator's institution(s). The resources at STScI will be used in support of this observatory level procedure. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
