Abstract This proposal provides calibration data for the HSP on any pointing instability seen by the HSP, or long term aperture location drifts. A star is positioned in a 1.0" aperture and repeatedly observed for three orbits. The procedure is repeated in fine lock mode after first being done in coarse track. A stellar source is used for the test and should be selected from the provided target list to provide a maximum amount of viewing time in an orbit. Description of proposed observations. This test measures target pointing drifts and internal aperture drifts in the HSP. A target is selected and placed in the finding aperture of the Image Dissector Tube (IDT) to be tested. The target is centered, the aperture scanned, and the target is then moved to the selected 1.0" aperture. The aperture is scanned every 7 minutes for three orbits. The aperture selected for this portion of the test is: UV1 - F248M 1.0-A The target star should selected for longest observation time. The test is first done in coarse track and then in fine lock and is performed on the UV1 detector. The scans of the 1.0" apertures are 29x29 area scans with .12 spacing. This provides a scan which is large enough to resolve both the target and the edges of the aperture using the light from the wings of the PSF of the stellar image. This allows plotting the location of the target the aperture, and their relative locations as a function of time and/or orbital position. Parallel PC images are taken to monitor the stability of the PC. This should allow determination of whether drifts are in the HSP or the focal plane structure (or FGSs). There will be two HSP images for every PC image. There should be sufficient time between HSP alignments to schedule the parallel PC data readout. Only single CCD readouts will be used, to keep the data volume down. The PCs are indicated as pure parallels, but will have to be manually assigned to get the scheduled. The entire proposal should be executed in PN format, the s/c lines at start and end are for attachment of special instructions for that purpose. The same guide stars should be used for the fine lock and coarse track segments. Revision History: 24 Nov 91: Test created-- nelson 02 Mar 92: text revised and added. Description of special scheduling requirements. The proposed test will require approximately 5 orbits of data collection time, 3 in coarse track and 2 in fine lock. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. The data reduction and analysis consist of examining the images of each aperture position to determine the H,V locations of the aperture, and measuring the position of the target relative to the edges of the apertures. Both target pointing drifts and aperture motions can be measured with these data and will be correlated with time and orbital position. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8.
