Scientific Justification. This activity will satisfy the following COSTAR SMOV Requirements: 1. Perform FOC phase retrieval scan. Take FOC images at out of focus DOB positions 2. Determine new FOC optical alignment. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. An interactive target execution will be executed to acquire the target into the FOC F/96 aperture. Next, an FOC image will be taken with the DOB and FOC tilt mechanisms at their current optimum positions. On the first execution of each set, this best position and the event flag will have been set at the end of the prerequisite alignment activities. For each subsequent repeat in this proposal, the positions will be set using the MOVES sequence. FOC images will be obtained at both the +4mm and -4mm DOB positions. These observations are repeated every 12 hours for total of 4 times after the coarse alignment is complete (prop 4733) and again every 12 hours for total of 5 times after the fine alignment (prop 4734). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. Prerequisites: Lines 10-41 or 110-141 after COSTAR/FOC Coarse Alignment with DOB and TILT updated (prop 4733) Lines 210-251 or 310-351 after COSTAR/FOC Fine Alignment with DOB and TILT updated (prop 4734) Real-time Requirements: 1. Real- time command and telemetry links are required by the OSS for the interactive target acquisition. 2. Real-time command and telemetry links are required by the OSS to move the mechanisms to their best positions and set event flags. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Engineering data will be reduced using the ESS and the COSTAR data analysis system to generate standard sorts and plots. Sorts and plots will be used to: 1. Verify DOB movements and performance 2. Verify COSTAR electrical performance Science data will be analyzed using the COSTAR/FOC data analysis system. The following analysis will be performed: 1. Calculate the centroid and encircled energy for each image and plot the results vs. DOB position. 2. Run phase retrieval on each image to determine the optical aberrations (Zernike coefficients). 3. Use the results of steps 1 and 2 and the COSTAR opto-mechanical model to determine new positions for DOB and X and Y Tilt mechanisms. Certain Data Base Updates: 1. None.
