Scientific Justification. This activity will satisfy the following COSTAR SMOV Requirements: 1. Perform FOC coarse focus scan. Take FOC images covering the DOB focus range. 2. Update FOC focus position to new best focus. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. An FOC image will be taken with the DOB and FOC tilt mechanisms at their new optimum positions as determined by the FOC F96/FGS Coarse Alignment test and uplinked prior to this test. OSS will then be used to move the DOB to the 0.0 mm position. There will be two real time contacts scheduled to complete this move. A COSTAR event flag will be set once the DOB reaches the 0.0 mm position to allow the next activity to proceed. An FOC interactive acquisition will be performed followed by an FOC image taken at the DOB 0.0 mm position. The COSTAR event flag used by OSS to signal successful completion of the move to 0.0 mm will then be checked, and if it is set the DOB will be moved to the +4.0 mm position. If the flag is not set the remainder of the DOB motions in this proposal will not execute. Following the move to +4.0 mm an FOC image will be taken. The DOB will then be moved to the +8.0 mm, -8.0 mm, and -4.0 mm positions with an FOC image begin taken at each DOB position. The DOB will then be commanded back to the 0.0 mm position and a last image taken. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. Prerequisites: 1. FOC F96/FGS Coarse Tilt Adjustment (proposal 5272) Real-time Requirements: 1. Real-time contact required at start of observations to move FOC mechanisms to best known position. 2. Real-time command and telemetry links are required by the OSS for the interactive target acquisition. 3. Real-time command and telemetry links are required by the OSS to move the DOB to the 0.0 mm position and set the event flag. Two contacts should be planned for the DOB move activity. This will allow additional attempts in case a contact is lost. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Engineering data will be reduced using the ESS and the COSTAR data analysis system to generate standard sorts and plots. Sorts and plots will be used to: 1. Verify DOB movements and performance 2. Verify COSTAR electrical performance Science data will be analyzed using the COSTAR/FOC data analysis system. The following analysis will be performed: 1. Calculate the centroid and encircled energy for each image and plot the results vs. DOB position. 2. Run phase retrieval on the most out of focus image on either side of optimal focus to determine the optical aberrations (Zernike coefficients). 3. Use the results of steps 1 and 2 and the COSTAR opto-mechanical model to determine new positions for DOB and X and Y Tilt mechanisms. Certain Data Base Updates: 1. None.
