Description of proposed observations. TEST DESCRIPTION: The basic test consists of 5 sequences: HRS, FOS RED, FOS BLUE, FOC96, and FOC96-extension. The first four of these use the M35 cluster. The standard Fall Heptathlon targets are used. The FOC96-extension sequence is an additional plate scale/orientation check using NGC 188. The FOS and HRS onboard acquisitions scenarios are robust in that they allow for several arcsec uncertainty in aperture positions. The FOS acquisitions will be done in several phases. A WFPC2 parallel image will gives us a coarse WFPC2 alignment and WFPC2- to-SI relative alignment. The HRS onboard acquisition procedure consists of a standard acquisition followed by a verification image. Four additional mosaics, each offset from the target will be taken to increase the search size in the event that the aperture (or FGSs) have moved considerably. The M35 portion of the FOC series is a Mode III and parallel WFPC. The NGC188 sequence, from which plate scale and instrument orientation will be verified, consists of a cross step pattern (implemented using targets with slight offsets. SPECIAL PROCEDURES: All M35 portions of the test must be obtained with the same guide stars and at the same roll angle. This technique will eliminate systematic errors and thus improve the accuracy of the relative SI alignments. Only small angle maneuvers are required to position each SI target into the aperture. We identified GUIDE STAR candidates (which are cluster members) and will work with SPSS in guide star selection. We require FN telemetry during each SI sequence. We do not need the 32 kb data during the entire series but only for a few minutes during the verification images. See section 5 and 6. CONDITIONAL REQUIREMENT: Three versions of this test are incorporated in the logsheet and differ by target: the fall (or -91 orientation), and spring (+91 orientation) versions using M35 and the version using NGC188. Three versions were included to accommodate different outcome of the servicing mission. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. This is an HST alignment diagnostic test and falls under the category of Engineering/Observatory level test. SPECIAL PROCEDURES: Non-standard commanding for telemetry setups and special scheduling requirements/guide star selection. 1. GUIDING REQUIREMENT: Two Guide Star Fine Lock for all lines. 2. GUIDE STAR SELECTION: The SAME guide star pair to be used for lines 100-130, the same pair for lines 400-430. Minimize the number of pairs used for lines 600-640. GUIDE STARS SELECTION: USE FGS 3 AS DOMINANT. USE FGS 1 AS SUBDOMINANT. 3. All SI-M35 sequences must be performed AT THE SAME ROLL in order to minimize systematic roll errors. 4. 32K Engineering - needed for analysis. Needed for a few minutes at the end of each the target acquisition sequences. CONDITIONAL REQUIREMENT: Three versions of this test are incorporated in the logsheet and differ by target: the fall (or -91 orientation, lines 100-260), and spring (+91 orientation, lines 400-453) versions using M35 and the version using NGC188 (lines 600- 653). Three versions were included to accommodate different outcomes of the servicing mission. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. SEQUENCE NO-GAP scheduling because of stringent pointing requirements, power constraints, and to maintain a steady environment. SEQ NON-INT included where possible, to minimize possibility of anomalous re-acquisitons. The WFPC2 pickoff mirror adjustment (proposal 4265) must be completed prior to this test. The adjustment will focus the star image on the WFPC2 and thus facilitate the extraction of accurate stellar positions. This test is to be performed post- servicing and pre-COSTAR. Data reduction and analysis plans. For the SI portion of the test, the data reduction will consist of the following: From the WFC images, the roll angle and absolute pointing on the sky will be calculated from the astrometic stars in it's field of view. Each SI aperture addressed in the test will be expressed in a WFC coordinate frame in arcsec. A global solution for all SIs can be made because the same guide star pair was used. Relative positions in this frame will be stored for trending. Note that the FGS/SI alignment is not addressed in this first analysis step. In the second analysis step, assumptions about the FGS/FGS alignment will have to be made in order to check the V2V3 calibration of the focal plane. The OMS facility will be used to extract astrometry and telemetry values, existing transformation programs and spreadsheet storage will be used to store and analyze the position data. Existing image processing facilities at the STScI will be used to reduce the WFPC frames and perform plate calibrations. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8.
