Abstract This proposal defines the procedure for determining the instrumental polarization of the polarimetric IDT (IDT#1, POL) on the HSP. 1 of 2 unpolarized standard stars wil be observed using various filter-polarizer combinations. These observations will permit the instrumental polarization to be calibrated. The instrumental polarization must be determined to a high precision in order to vectoriallly remove it from HSP polarization observations to determine the actual astronomical polarization. Final run of proposal will look at one of 2 possible stars previously observed to get another look at the throughput. Revision History: Mark H. The proposed observations will use the polarimetric IDT (IDT#1, POL) configured in the digital, single aperture mode. The observations complement proposal 3985, with the intention of reducing the error bars determined from reduction of that data. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. If HD115271 observations are difficult to schedule, choose HD176425. We MUST have FINE LOCK to reduce the jitter contributing to the errors in the 3985 data. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Data reduction consists of determining the count rates through each filter- polarizer combination at each ST roll angle for each of the unpolarized stars observed. The data analysis involves using the Fesenkov-Ohman analytical relations to calculate the percent polarization and the plane of polarization relative to the appropriate polarizer orientation from the count rates for each star. In addition, the count rates from observation of the same unpolarized star in different polarizer locations on the same filter will be used to derive the relative scale factors between the polarizers. These scale factors will be derived for all stars observed to confirm that they are independent of count rate. The values of the instrumental polarization parameters and the polarizer relative scale factors will be supplied to the Calibration Data Base. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Resources to be supplied by investigator's institution(s).
