Abstract This proposal defines the procedure for determining, in the most stringent manner possible, the short-term photometric stability of the HSP. Using the UV1 IDT in the digital mode of operation, it will determine whether any system in ST or the HSP (mechanical or electrical) introduces extraneous white (frequency independent) noise or small amplitude periodicities into the observations at a level of one part in 24,000. This procedure will also satisfy the relevant Contract End Item (CEI) specification regarding photometric accuracy. Percival UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN USA J. F. Dolan GODDARD SPACE FLIGHT CENTER USA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. The proposed observations will use the UV1 IDT (IDT#2) on the HSP configured in the single color photometry mode with an inner 1.0 arcsec aperture to sample the stellar source through the F240W filter. The observations planned will consist of integrations totaling 20,000 seconds on a rapidly oscillating peculiar A star. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. No real-time observations are requested for this proposal. The observation should be scheduled for orbits that avoid the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA). Pointing Stability: Coarse track is understood to have less than 19 marcsec stability. That is satisfactory for all observations in the 10" and 1.0" UV1, UV2, and VIS IDT apertures, the PMT,and the 6.0" (finding) POL aperture. HSP requires fine lock for all observations in the 0.65" POL IDT apertures and all 0.4" apertures. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. The observatons in this proposal require a total integration time of 20,000 seconds. The extended nature of the observation is essential for two reasons: a) to have an extended record of the photometric response of the HSP over time scale where any significant thermal or electronic changes will become evident; b) to collect of order 600 million photons in order to determine the nature of noise sources to one part in 24,000. This test will test performance of fine lock with HSP as well as validate the FPO fix for HSP. For these reasons the test should be performed in fine lock, and only scheduled after the FPO fix is operational at the STScI ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. The data reduction is routine: the raw (star+sky) data are corrected for dead- time losses (if any) and are converted into count rates. The sky measurements are also converted into count rates and subtracted from the (star+sky) data. The reduced data will then be plotted as a time series and compared with similar time series of other relevant instrumental parameters (e.g. detector temperature). The data analysis will consist of two specific approaches: a) a trend analysis of the various time series to determine the instrumental hysteresis (if any) and to identify the nature of irregular noise sources in the data; b) power spectrum analysis of the various time series to determine the nature of any periodic components of noise in the data. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Additional comments or special requests. No supporting or coordinated observations with other facilities are anticipated. Page 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10. Resources to be supplied by investigator's institution(s). Data reduction and analysis will be supported on two computer facilities at the University of Wisconsin in Madison: a) a VAX 11/780 computer under the VMS operating system with extensive application software; b) a PDP 11/70 computer under the UNIX 2.9 operating system; Both computer facilities support the FITS tape standards and thus can readily access the ST-FITS data export products. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
