Abstract Our goal is to establish a spectroscopic method which can reliably distinguish the effects of age from those of chemical composition in the integrated light of stellar populations older than one billion years. This program forms an essential link between two of HST's most powerful capabilities: detailed color-magnitude diagram (CMD) studies of nearby galaxies and globular clusters, and integrated light studies of high redshift galaxies in early phases of evolution. As a first step, we propose to obtain high precision FOS ultraviolet spectroscopy of bright, nearby extragalactic systems, to combine this with ground-based and IUE data in a comprehensive spectral synthesis analysis, and to compare the results with independent CMD studies by HST. Our results will help us to develop an effective method for interpreting the lower S/N data which will be available for distant objects at large lookback times. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. O'Connell VIRGINIA, UNIVERSITY OF USA Prof. Chi-Chao Wu STSCI USA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. The principal observing requirements for this program are: (a) accessibility to the 2200-3300 angstrom region; (b) a minimum S/N of 20 for spectral resolution elements of <10 angstrom for wavelengths >2500 angstroms; and (c) a desired S/N > 50 for objects where this does not require integrations longer than ~1 hour. All of the program objects are extended sources. Our requirements can only be met in reasonable integration times by using the FOS with gratings and the 1" circular entrance aperture (the best- calibrated large aperture with the FOS). Acquisition with the FOS will be done by a standard ACQ/PEAK-UP procedure using the G270H grating. This permits the diffuse nature of the clusters to be accurately mapped. The position of the center of each cluster in the UV has been obtained from EARLY_ACQ WFC F336W images (see specific note below). In addition, ACQ/PEAK-UP will provide low S/N integated spectra in the G270H region for the whole cluster, against which the spectra for the center of the cluster can be compared. Three separate FOS spectra are needed for each object: a) The Blue Digicon (FOS/Blue) will be used to obtain a low S/N spectrum for 1150 - 1700 ang., using the G130H grating. (Note: We would prefer to use the 160L grating, but feel we cannot, due to scatter light problems reported on pg. 13 of FOS Instrument Handbook, Suppl. 1, May 1989.) These observations are essential to determine the contribution of stars hotter than 15000 deg K and to remove their effects from the longer wavelength data. Relatively long exposures are needed, even for the low (~100 ang) resolution required. b) The Red Digicon (FOS/Red) will be used to obtain: (i) A high S/N, 5.5 ang resolution sprectrum from 2200- 3300 ang, using the G270H grating; and (ii) A high S/N, 8.3 ang reolution spectrum from 3250-4800 ang, using the G400H grating, which provides overlap with ground-based data and measures important features such as NH, CN and Ca II at the same spatial resolution as the UV data. There is a 50 ang. overlap between gratings G270H and G400H. There is a 500 ang. gap between G130H and G270H. Since this gap covers the 1700-2200 ang. region, where IUE spectra indicate that flux from these objects is at a minimum, this gap will not be covered with the current set of observations. All S/N ratios are calculated per spectral resolution element. In addition to meeting our scientific criteria, the targets for this program were selected for expected UV brightness, relatively low background contamination and extinction, and for having planned GTO observations of CMD's. NOTE: The target positions have been measured measured from WFC EARLY ACQ images taken in the Cycle 1 Program 2298. Positions of all stars and clusters in these images were measured using the updated program of Gilmozzi. These positions were then checked against GSSS positions of the same targets. Absolute positions agree to 0.6'' in RA and DEC, most of the error of which is from the GSSS positions. WFC positions agree to accurate ground-based positions to better than 0.5'' in both RA and DEC. The WFC EARLY ACQ images show each cluster has a well-defined center that can be used with ACQ/PEAK-UP to accurately center the cluster in the 1'' circular aperture. Page 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. High S/N observations at spectral resolutions of 10 ang. in the region 2200-3300 ang. are required. Only HST can provide such data. The small aperture observations of M31 globular clusters possible with HST will maximize the cluster signal with respect to the of the background from the bulges and disks of these galaxies. This cannot be reliably done from the ground. The combined ground- based data available to us from our own separate programs include integrated spectra for ~700 galaxies, sellar spectra for ~500 stars, and visible/IR spectra energy distributions for ~200 galaxies. Among our group, we have previous or ongoing observations with IUE of: normal F,G,K main sequence stars; G,K giant stars; M31 globular cluster (poor S/N); elliptical galaxies and Seyfert galaxies. By the time of our HST observations we will have an ultraviolet stellar 'library' containing ~1500 stars. Some of the results of these ongoing studies are cited in Section 2 above. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. We have estimated average fluxes centered at 5 wavelengths for each object, based in most cases on extrapolations from IUE data either of the object itself or of an object of similar spectral energy distribution. V magnitudes with a 1" circular apertue are estimated from available photoeletric photometry. If our spectra achieve the required S/N for these 5 regions, they will yield the desired S/N for the whole spectrum. The spectral resolutions used in the calculations of S/N listed in the Exposure section are: 100 ang. at 1500 ang., 5.5 ang. at 2500 ang., 2800 ang. and 3100 ang., and 8.3 ang. at wavelengths 3500 ang. and longer. As FOS/Blue is much less sensitive than FOS/Red at all wavelengths >1600 ang., our strategy is to use FOS/Blue only for the G130H observations (we cannot use the G160L due to scattered light problems), and to integrate for at least one orbit (~1700 sec). In some cases this procedure will yield higher S/N for the bluer clusters, thus permitting us to obtain wavelength resolution higher than 100 ang. at comparable S/N. FOS/Red will be used for the G270H and G400H observations. Description of special calibration exposures. (a) Since all of the objects in this program will have low UV flux levels, avoidance of additional sources of background, such as the Gegenshein, is desirable. (b) N/A Page 4 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. The spectra will be reduced to absolute fluxes, the three spectral regions combined and reliable S/N estimates obtained. We will use HST software for this phase. The spectral line features of each spectrum will be intercompared and measured in a consistent manner according to methods we have already developed using IUE observations of stars. Corresponding visible and infrared spectral energy distributions of the same objects will be added (Question 8), providing complete wavelength coverage from 1200 ang. to 2.2 microns, with <10 ang. resolution out to 1 micron. Telescopes such as the MMT and the CFHT have demonstrated that it is possible to obtain ground-based observations with 1"-2" spatial resolution. Observations at >4500 ang. are little affected by atmospheric refraction. As part of the initial analysis, the spectral line indices of 500 stars measured by Burstein, Faber and collaborators, of 300 stars measured by Rose, and of 200 stars measured by O'Connell will be combined into a unified data base. All stellar observations made by IUE of reasonable S/N (over 10,000 spectra for ~2000 stars) are being reprocessed by DB, RWO, CCW, Ralph Bohlin and Linda Stryker. These spectra will be analyzed in a manner similar to the HST spectra, and an external calibration of age, metallicity and gravity will be establshed for each UV index. We have shown (Fanelli et al. 1990 364, 292) that the UV line indices between 2400-3200 ang. are sensitive primarily to temperature, with gravity and metallicity effects of much less importance. The full UV-to-IR spectral energy distributions of the targets will then be analyzed in two independent ways: 1) With the optimizing spegtral synthesis program of O'Connell; 2) Using the evolutionary modeling methods developed by Faber, Burstein and collaborators and by Rose, which give greater emphasis to the correlations among the absorption-line indices. A primary goal of the project is to compare the populations of the globular clusters, as inferred from these analyses, to the known CMD's obtained by other HST observers. It is obviously essential that the deduced ages and metallicities of these two different approaches agree. Any discrepencies will require careful study. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Additional comments or special requests. WFC EARLY ACQ exposures were obtained, and both relative positions and apparent fluxes for offset stars and clusters were determined (See NOTE in Question 3). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9.
