Abstract Observe Jupiter with the FOC for H2 auroral emissions at 1600A, using two filters in series to reduce red leak. Image the polar aurora on seven consecutive orbits (6 south, 1 north) to cover one Jupiter rotation, in early 1994. Starting time with respect to Jupiter's CML will be chosen to insure overlapping coverage near System III longitude 0 degrees at the beginning and end of the sequence. S/N estimate based on previous HST images, with FOC pixel binning to 2x2 (arcsec)^2 assumed. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. If this supplementary proposal is executed, it will probably be early in 1994. Some details concerning small angle slews following safety checks will change, by a few arc seconds, when the execution period is known to within a few weeks. The sequence of consecutive orbits will start and end when the CML (III) is about 0 deg. In the middle, when the CML is about 180 deg, there will be a one-orbit excursion from the south to the north pole, and back. Continuum images for planetary navigation will be obtained. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Images will be calibrated and binned as necessary to produce optimum information. Exposures are limited not only by photons but also by planetary rotation, so that standard S/N estimates are not meaningful. Previous experience with HST/FOC images of the Jovian aurora shows that the chosen exposure times will produce excellent images. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 13. Auroral imaging of the polar regions of Jupiter will be performed with the FOC, using filters F175W and F152M in series, to reduce red leak and provide reasonable sensitivity to H2 emission at 1600 A. Continuum images at 2200A will also be obtained. Exposure times and the total number of exposures, being constrained by HST efficiency and orbital considerations and by Jovian rotation, cannot change. If the auroral images are obtained without breaking GS lock, a second set of continuum images at the end of the auroral sequence will be omitted, and an additional auroral orbit will be added. This is handled by a COND IF ... REQ in the exposure list. The program includes the FOC bright object observing procedure. Dark exposures are added before each new filter combination, to be executed during Earth occultation, immediately before the associated science exposures. The visibility period following a DARK should start with a full GS ACQ to undo the effects of preceding SIPS. A pointed uplink should follow the GS ACQ. If telemetry indicates the proper filters are in place, a precalculated SIP (based on the actual S/C roll angle) will be made, and observations will continue.
