Abstract WE WILL OBTAIN FOS UV/OPTICAL SPECTRA OF TWO CHEMICALLY EXTREME EMISSION KNOTS IN THE O-RICH SUPERNOVA REMNANT N132D IN THE LARGE MAGELLANIC CLOUD. THE SPATIAL RESOLUTION OF HST WILL PERMIT US TO OBTAIN SPECTRA OF INDIVIDUAL KNOTS HAVING VERY DIFFERENT OPTICAL CHARACTERISTICS THAT ARE BLENDED TOGETHER IN SPECTRA OBTAINED WITH IUE. THE OPTICAL DATA WITH THE SAME APERTURES IN THE SAME POSITIONS WILL ENSURE A PROPER UV/OPTICAL COMPARISON. THESE DATA WILL PROVIDE IMPORTANT DIAGNOSTICS OF THE EXCITATION MECHANISMS IN THIS OBJECT AS WELL AS TESTS OF NUCLEOSYNTHESIS THEORIES FOR MASSIVE STARS, AND WILL PERMIT AN IMPROVED UNDERSTANDING OF THE DYNAMICS OF SN EXPLOSIONS AND MIXING IN THE EJECTA. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. We will place the 1" square FOS aperture on the two chemically-distinct knots within the IUE-P1 aperture, as shown in Figure 1. This is the best compromise between desired spatial resolution and throughput. Furthermore, the paired aperture is not being used for "sky subtraction" but simply for its larger throughput. Hence, STEP-PATT=SINGLE has been set as an optional parameter. Since the filaments being observed are extended at the several arcsec level, we will be able to blind offset from a nearby GSSS star with relative impunity. A mis- positioning even by as much as 0.5-1.0" is not critical, although hopefully it will be better than that. We assume a filled 1" square aperture and no PSF light loss as would be the case for a point source. We assume exposures with FOS/BL G160L (3800s), and FOS/RD G270H (1700s), G400H (800s), and G570H (800s) at each of the two positions. G160L is considerably lower resolution than the other gratings, but covers the FUV range of interest with one grating. Even so, the G160L resolution should be superior to that achieved with IUE (~11A). Combined UV/optical data are requested with the same apertures in the same positions to avoid comparing "apples and oranges". The switch from FOS/BL to FOS/RD (or vice versa) can be accomplished at each position without re-acquiring the offset star, implying that the observations need to be done as a block (i.e. without other observations interspersed). The ordering of the gratings, however, is not important and can be done so as to make the observation as efficient as possible. As shown in section 4 below, these exposures will provide excellent detections of known UV/optical lines as well as permitting a search for possible fainter features that might be present at hitherto undetectable levels. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
