It'll possibly correct any position of the pick-off mirror if needed and provide an aperture location update for the PDB. Scientific Justification. This part of the WFPC2 alignment and will only be performed if needed. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. The repeated image of a fairly crowded and bright field in WFALL takes 5 seconds in F555W. There are mV=14-15 stars near the center of all chips (about 12 total in the field.) These stars are exposed to predicted half to full well with gain 15 e/DN. This basic exposure is then taken repeatedly with the fold mirrors moved in a outward spiralling 4x4 pattern centered at the position determined by proposal 4270 (WFPC2 Coarse Focus/ WFII-ALI-02). The center position itself is is taken twice - once at the beginning and once at the end of the sequence. The scan steps are each about 48 arcsec corresponding to about 61 command voltage steps, and to a 1.1% pupil shear of 1/12.7 waves rms coma, giving a total coverage of +/- 72 voltage steps from the starting point. The time for each set of mirror adjustments can be kept to under 6 minutes when the commanding is interleaved (a single adjustment takes 5 min 19 sec). The first four sets of positions, together with the central position are repeated at the end with a different set of guide stars thus providing the best coverage in the central region and protecting against an initial attitude update problem (or guide star acquisition failure), for example. This repeat can be scheduled a day or sl later in case the tape recorder is filled by the first set of exposures. Two targets are used from proposal 4333 (WFPC2 Coarse POM Adjustment, Act Sum WFII- ALI-02). We also need 3 five second dark exposures at the beginning of the proposal. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Prerequisites: 1) Proposal 4270 ( WF/PC-II Coarse Focus -- Act Summ WFII-ALI-03) must be completed prior to execution of this proposal. 2) Proposal 5252 (WF/PC-II AFM Turn on -- Act Summ WFII-05). 3) The Secondary Mirror Move #2 and COSTAR DOB Adjustments may need to be completed. (This is in proposal 4270) 4) CCDs at -22C or lower (Proposal 4721). 5) TEC power can be off.
