Abstract The presence of a circumstellar dust disk around Beta Pictoris is currently interpreted in the context of planetary system formation. Knowledge of the size and composition of the dust grains is fundamental to the understanding of the formation, evolution, and lifetime of the protoplanetary disk. Despite many IR and optical observations of the disk, the size and composition of the grain population(s) in the disk remains a subject of controversy. We propose to use the unique capabilities of HST to conduct spectrophotometric observations of the disk 4 arcsec from B Pic. Most of the currently proposed grain compositions have strongly discriminating UV spectral features, such as absorption bands or cutoffs, which are suitable for a diagnostic study of the grain composition. By comparing the HST spectra with published laboratory reflectance spectra and with synthetic reflectance spectra modelled for different grain properties and sizes using Mie scattering theory, we may better constrain the grain properties and refine the current disk models which seek to unify the optical and IR observations of the disk. The HST spectra may also show spectral-line evidence of diatomic species common in comets, which are thought to be the cause of the time-varying absorption line features observed in optical and UV spectra of B Pic itself. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. Description of proposed observations. Description of the observations: the three stage acquisition of Beta Pic will be conducted using the blue digicon and the high dispersion G130H grating. We will obtain a 1 minute exposure of Beta Pictoris itself, and offset the telescope 4 arcsec SW to a location coincident with the midplane of that extension of the disk. A second offset will then be performed to a location 8 arcsec SW of Beta Pictoris, once again coincident with the midplane of that extension of the disk. A third offset will then be performed to a location 4 arcsec SE of Beta Pic and 90 degrees from the plane of the disk. No circumstellar dust is seen perpendicular to the plane of the disk, so any emission at this location should be attributed to the stellar PSF. These exposures will establish both the nature of the stellar UV spectrum and the contribution of the PSF to the disk spectra. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
