Principal Investigator Institution Country Telephone Jaime Esper MOC BFEC USA 301-286-6106 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Abstract OTA/FGS CHARACTERIZATION Servicing Mission activities may expose the HST to stresses that could change the OTA/FGS optical alignments and FGS performance characteristics. The current proposal attempts to characterize such effects by measuring the FGS transfer function at various positions within the three FGSs, both before and after the Servicing Mission. This test includes the transfer scans at 5 positions within each FGS along the arc through the center of the FOV that are to be run after the servicing mission. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. OTA/FGS CHARACTERIZATION Servicing Mission activities may expose the HST to stresses that could change the OTA/FGS optical alignments and FGS performance characteristics. The FGS transfer function calibration will become a most critical, end-to-end verification of the OTA/FGS optical system. Slight changes in S-Curve morphology will be indicative of changes in the optical train, and hence will provide a quick way of ensuring the OTA/FGS performance. This test includes transfer scans at 5 positions within each FGS. Data from this test will also provide important insight into the question concerning the FGSs' ability to acquire and track stars for both spacecraft guidance and astrometry science. This test will determine the characteristics of the s-curves as a function of the location in the focal plane. It will also provide data to verify FGS PMT well- being. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. A) Acquire brightest available Guide Stars in guiding FGSs using Fine Lock (guide star magnitudes less than 13). 1) Perform 5 transfer scans in FGS3 with the clear aperture at position 1. 2) Repeat 1 for FOUR other positions, for a total of 5 positions and 25 scans. B) Repeat A with FGS2 as astrometer. C) Repeat A with FGS1 as astrometer. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. PREREQUISITES: 1) Fine Lock guiding re-enabled via FGS Pattern Match data analysis. SPECIAL SCHEDULING NOTES: (1) The bright target star is required to provide high signal to noise in the transfer scan data. The brightest available guide stars are desired to provide minimum jitter when data are analyzed. (2) Steps can be taken by SPSS to improve guide star availability - i.e., non- centerlining, spoiler radius. (3) 32 Kbit data are required. (4) This sequence of observations are to be performed after servicing mission but before any secondary mirror adjustments are performed. These observations will also have been performed (via another proposal) within the month prior to the servicing mission. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Data reduction will be performed in the PASS, and data analysis will be carried out with the use of algorithms and software developed by HUGHES DOS. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10. Resources to be supplied by investigator's institution(s). Computer facilities at HUGHES DOS home facility. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
