Abstract We propose a Snapshot Survey of about 100 central stars in Galactic planetary nebulae. The aim is to search for close, resolved binary companions, which can be used to determine distances to the nebulae through photometric parallaxes. We argue that about 10 percent of the central stars will have visual companions that will be detectable at HST resolution. The images will be obtained in the Planetary Camera I band (F785LP), with exposure times of a few seconds up to about 30 minutes. We show that close companions as much as 5-6 mag fainter in the I band than the central stars are detectable with HST. The ultimate aim of the program is to provide a group of objects that can be used to determine accurate photometric distances to planetary nebulae, thus greatly improving the presently unsatisfactory state of the Galactic planetary-nebula distance scale. This distance scale is crucial to our understanding of the evolution of the nebulae and their central stars, the stellar population and birth rate of planetary nebulae, and their use as extragalactic distance indicators. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. For most of the central stars, we will obtain one PC frame in the I band (F785LP), in order to search for close visual companions. Depending on their magnitudes, they will be observed on gyros (brighter than V=12.5) or Coarse Track (fainter than 12.5). The exposure times are chosen to give about 25,000 electrons in the central pixel of the stellar image. A few objects already known to be visual binaries will be observed in both V and I.
