Scientific Justification. This is the first step in WFPC2 alignment ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. Description: Images are taken of a field that has a wide range of stellar magnitudes and is well characterized with astrometric accuracy of better than 0.1 arcsec, and photometric accuracy of 0.1 mag. Filters F502N and F953N, F555W are exposed for 40, 80 and 40 seconds respectively to give many visible stellar images, even if they are tens of pixels across. The F555W image is overexposed, in case the alignment is as bad as 20% of the pupil which would supress count rates by a factor of about 100. It is taken last to avoid residual image problems. Images are taken with 15 electrons/DN gain. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. Prerequisites: 1) Chips at -22C or below but TEC power can be off (initially prop 4711). 2) Calibration System Flat Field Check (prop 4707). Duration: 2 orbits + 48 hours think time before dependent operations, and mirror setting. The whole observation set takes one orbit, but it should be repeated 12 hours later with independent GS acquisitions in order to ensure data is taken. Requires OSS short turnaround data delivery. Request 3 30 minute uplinks after 9 hours and before repeat of data take and a second set of 3 30min uplinks after 36 hours. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Results: 1) Pick-off mirror coarse alignment move (will also check mechanism). 2) Check on Photometric assumptions made for subsequent alignment activities. 3) Check on OTA focus. If more than 2 mm in error, we will move the SM once in focus. 4) Check of initial aperture location in the PDB. No updates are anticipated. Comments: Use Guide Star catalog to 'pattern match', if field is not immediately recognized. Pick off mirror motion determined from magnitude and direction of coma should be consistent with apparent field position change within latch uncertainites. The sign of any OTA focus contingency move will be obvious from pupil asymmetries if the focus is bad enough to need it. The needed refocus should be well within COSTAR's adjustment capability (4 mm) after the uncertainties in the OTA focus are taken into account. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
