Jefferys TEXAS, UNIVERSITY OF USA 512-471-4461 PROFESSOR OF ASTRONO ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Abstract Nearby binary-star systems with rapid orbital motion are and will continue to be the principal source of our knowledge on stellar masses. Owing to its expected high angular resolution and high-precision astrometric performance, HST will provide unusual opportunities for binary-star research. The purpose of this project is to measure with HST/FGS in the transfer-function mode selected binary stars, primarily visual pairs at critical phases in their orbits, in order to improve substantially our knowledge of their orbital elements. These results will not only yield improved mass values for the systems so investigated, but will also serve as important calibrators for a large body of existing data on binary-star orbits and stellar masses. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. GENERAL FORM Proposal 4254c PI: William H. Jefferys Proposal Title: ORBITAL MOTIONS OF CLOSE BINARY STARS ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1. Hemenway TEXAS, UNIVERSITY OF USA Peter J. Shelus TEXAS, UNIVERSITY OF USA William F. Van Altena YALE UNIVERSITY USA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. Each observation will consis of two separate sets of ten individual scans carried out in the multiple scan mode, i.e., continuous scans with reversal of scan direction between any two subsequent scans. The two sets of scans constituting each observation will be separated by 45 +/- 15 days, i.e., by about 45 +/- deg. in scan-axes orientations. A scan rate of 0.04 arcsec/sec and scan length of 1.2 arcsec per interferometer axis will be used. The corresponding exposure time will be 300 sec. For purposes of S/N calculations, a sample time of 0.025 sec is adopted, corresponding to an effective step-size of 0.001 arcsec. One observation (as defined above) is desired per target during cycle 3. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. Most of the binary targets selected for HST observation are expected to have angular separations less than 30 mas (the current resolution limit for speckle interferometry with 4-m class telescopes). Several are also fainter than the current speckle limit. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. The requirement to obtain scan sets separated by 45 days +/- 15 days is justified in order to obtain relative positions of binary-star components with similar or equal accuracy in two (orthogonal) coordinates. The (preferable but less likely) alternative is to roll the spacecraft by 45 +/- 15 deg between sets of scans made in quicker succession. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Data reduction and analysis will be carried out with the use of algorithms and software developed and already successfully used by STAT. The data reduction and anlysis will be carried out at Lowell Observatory. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10. Resources to be supplied by investigator's institution(s). Computer facilities at STAT members' institutions. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 13. Close visual binaries as well as potentially resolvable spectroscopic and occultation binaries will be observed for the pupose of measuring relative positions and orbital motions of their components. Most of the visual binaries will be at orbital phases never before observed. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
