Abstract Flight software 4.0 release will include an important new capability for the GHRS -- return to brightest point following a spiral search. This will become the default target acquisition mode for most observations. A test will be performed by acquiring a standard calibration star using the previous standard mode and taking a confirmation image. Then we will slightly reposition the telescope to mimic typical initial pointing errors and perform a return to brightest based spiral search. This will again be followed by a confirmation image. This exercise of the new flight software and commanding will directly test, under known acquisition conditions, whether the basic procedure works. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Scientific Justification. A more robust method of performing Mode II target acquisitions with the GHRS is being implemented and will be available for general use early in Cycle 2. This proposal simply tests the effectiveness of the new software by exercising it under controlled circumstances. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. Part 1: lines 1-3 a routine mode II spiral search on the previously observed target, BD+28D4211 using BRIGHT and FAINT limits. Standard acquisition is followed by an ACQ/PEAKUP and a confirmation image. Part 2: The telescope is repostioned to put the image center in a predictable position relative to a new mode II spiral search conducted using RETURN TO BRIGHTEST lines 11-13 will be a direct repeat of 1-3 except for adoption of the different target selection mode. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5.
