Abstract We propose to obtain WF and FOC/48 imagery of one of the nearest of the super-metal- poor blue irregular galaxies known, GR8. The imagery will be obtained through wide band UV, B, V, R, and I filters and narrow-band filters isolating H-alpha and [OIII]5007. The wide-band imagery will be used to evaluate the massive star IMF, determination of the age distribution of groups of unresolved stars in the galaxies, and detect possible extended halo indicative of an old stellar population. The narrow band imagery will be used to identify the amount and spectral index of the ionizing radiation from OB stars, and detect supernova remnants, planetary nebulae, and emission-line stars. It is hoped that the results will enable us to evaluate the chemical and stellar evolutionary history of these relatively rare systems and their place in the larger picture of galaxy formation and evolution. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Description of proposed observations. Highest priority is Wide-Field Camera imagery of GR8 through F336W, F439W, & F555W filters (effectively providing UBV photometry of resolved stars and Q-index mapping of unresolved stellar population). In addition, WFC exposures through F702W & F785LP filters will enable us to study R-I and the old stellar population. WFC images through F502N & F656N will enable us to study the ionized gas in the system (via mapping H-alpha and [OIII]5007-- noting that F502N and F656N are suited for GR8's low mean radial velocity of +171 km/s-- will be used to study the morphology and physics of the ionized gas, for which the ratio gives a UV field ionization parameter; as well as search for strong [OIII] shock ionized features suggestive of SNRs-- even emission line stars, & luminous PNe may be detectable). Finally, a FOC/48 exposure of the center of GR8 through a UV filter (F150W) will enable the hot stellar population to be mapped and the UV ionizing sources quantified. Since the B(25) isophotal diameter of GR8 is 79 arc sec the WFC field is a good match for imaging almost the entire system. Since the brightest stars are known to be at V=19.5, and our UBVRI exposures are expected to reach 24-25 mag with reasonable photometric accuracy, we expect to be able to resolve and measure magnitudes and colors for the brightest 5 magnitudes of the massive star stellar population in GR8. Comparison of their characteristics with those in other galaxies like the Milky Way and the Magellanic Clouds; systems of different metallicity and possible different evolutionary histories is of astrophysical interest, as well as confirming the reported flattening of the luminosity function of the GR8 stellar ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
