These observations by the FOS and HRS depend on the ability of the HST to acquire a specific feature of a planet within a spectrograph aperture, and to track it. On-board HRS and FOS acquisitions of planetary satellites, followed by slews to the specific features within the planetary system, will be used. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. The ST is required both for access to the ultraviolet below 3000 A, where many molecules of planetary interest have strong absorption bands, and for its spatial resolution capability. Of further importance is the ability of the ST to obtain data at better spectral resolution and signal to noise than has been possible previously. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. Real-time observations are not currently planned for this proposal. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. There are no special requirements of these types. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Spectra will be combined into one covering the range from 1500 to 3200 A and divided by a published solar ultraviolet spectrum to obtain an albedo curve. This curve will be compared to model atmospheres to determine various trace gas compositions. Numerous hydrocarbon candidates arise from IR studies and theoretical work. An important part of the analysis will be to include the effects of vertical inhomogeneity. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10. Observations of Saturn will be made at moderate spatial resolution (1-2 arc sec) and spectral resolution (several A) at the poles and equator.
