Abstract The FOS will be used with small apertures to map the stellar velocity dispersion and rotation in a grid covering the central 1" of NGC4472. The velocity disperions and rotation curves will be used to model the nuclear dynamics and to measure the nuclear M/L. Line strengths will be used to measure changes in the stellar populations in the central 1". FOS spectra of any emission-line clouds within the nuclear region will be used to establish their physical characteristics, ionization mechanisms, and dynamics. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. FOS observations of NGC 4472 will consist of spectra using grating G570H. We will use the 0.3" aperture on the nucleus and at positions of +/-0.25" along the major and minor axes. Additional spectra through the 0.5" aperture using the same grating will be obtained at positions of +/-0.50" along the major and minor axes. Acquisition will be done using a binary search on a nearby star identified in a WFC image, followed by two small peak-ups on the the nucleus of NGC 4472. We will use spectra of the K star F193 obtained with the same grating and aperture during Cycle 2 observations as a template star in Fourier quotient deconvolutions. Internal wavelength calibrations will be obtained through the same grating and aperture on each of the NGC 4472 exposures. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. NGC 4472 has been observed extensively from the ground both photometrically and spectroscopically. Our dispersion measurements at 0.5" will be used to tie in to ground-based measurements at larger radii. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. The observations of the nuclear region of NGC 4472 are arranged on a finely spaced (0.25") rectangular grid along the major and minor axes. To ensure the precise relative registration of the pointing positions in the grid, we wish to perform only one target acquisition and use only small angle maneuvers to obtain the spectra at each of the 9 ensuing points in the grid. The requisite observations have been indicated with GROUP NO GAP in the exposure log sheet. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. Precise wavelength calibrations are required to study the kinematics of the gas and stars in the nucleus of NGC 4472. Internal WAVE calibrations are required for observations using grating G570H as indicated in the exposure log. These calibration exposures must be obtained immediately following the science exposures with no intervening motion of the FOS filter/grating wheel or apertures. Page 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. The FOS spectra will be processed using the latest available calibration data to transform the raw count data into flux-calibrated, wavelength-calibrated images. Velocities and dispersions for the NGC 4472 spectra will be obtained using Fourier quotient routines operating in IRAF based on the algorithms outlined by Sargent et al (1977). In addition, we will test more complex dynamical models for NGC 4472 by folding spectra of our template star through the dynamical model and the point response of HST and integrating the resulting spectra over the FOS apertures (eg, Dressler & Richstone 1988; Kormendy 1988). This will allow us to test the validity of our conclusions in the face of complications due to the aberrated images produced by the primary mirror. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Additional comments or special requests. PC and WFC images of NGC 4472 (when available) will be measured for precise target coordinates, so that the FOS observations can be done as blind offsets from a nearby isolated star. While not officially listed as co-investigators, the following scientists are actively involved in research with the FOS GTO team and are expected to contribute significantly to its scientific output: W.
