Abstract Obtain data on the stellar populations in the central cores of globular clusters. Clusters with and without central unresolved cusps, and with and without central X- ray sources will be observed. Spectra will be obtained at the center of the UV brightness, and at a distance within about one core radius. We might expect these spectra to differ; massive objects formed in collisions may produce unexpected spectral features, as well as relatively intense UV radiation in the central core. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Since the globular clusters are faint, use the low dispersion G160L and the Prism on the Blueside. Use the lower 0.3" aperture. The PC images are essential for target acquisition for the spectra. PC filters are F336W, and F547M. Cycle 3: 303-308 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. The high spatial resolution is required to resolve the interesting structure in the cores of the globular clusters. We have obtained ground based CCD images of the targets for comparison. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. The SV prerequisite programs for all FOS observations in this program are: Prop ID 2195 FOS Target Acquisition Tests - All observations Prop ID 1317 Int./Ext. Wavelength Offsets - 1st target Prop ID 1318 Spectral Flat Fields - 1st target Prop ID 1320 Absolute Spectrophotometry - 1st visit of bright targets All WF/PC imaging with a center wavelength blueward of 5000 Angstroms requires UV flood ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. The images will be examined for UV-bright objects in the ratios of the PC images in different bandpasses as a quick look analysis. A more detailed examination of the images will come from a DAOPHOT analysis of the PC photometry of all of the stars. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Additional comments or special requests. This program does not become a viable scientific investigation until 5 of the 6 globular clusters have been observed by both the WFPC and FOS. No data should be made public sooner than 1 year after that time. The PC and WFC images will be measured for precise target coordinates, so that the FOS observations can be done as blind offsets from a nearby isolated star. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. Description of previous HST work. All GTO/FOS programs. Programs GTO/FOS 1052 and continuation program GTO/FOS 3281 are related. Page 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10. Resources to be supplied by investigator's institution(s). The computer facilities and research assistance for this work have been funded entirely by grants, except for: 1. Easy access to the public GSSS resources. 2. Occassional use of the Celco image production capabilities for publication quality hardcopies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
