Bahcall INSTITUTE FOR ADVANCED STUDY USA (609) 734-8054 PROFESSOR ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Abstract Five quasars [NAB 0024+22, PKS 0003+15, UM 381, UM 324, and AO 1058+11] that lie behind rich clusters of galaxies will be studied spectroscopically with the FOS to see if the clusters produce ultraviolet absorption lines. All of the quasar spectra will be used also to help determine the statistics of quasar absorption lines, the main goal of the GTO proposal "Evolution of Lyman-alpha and C IV Absorption Systems" (J. Bahcall, PI). ST observations are required in order to observe the ultraviolet absorption lines that may be produced by the nearby rich clusters of galaxies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Description of proposed observations. Targets 1-4 will be observed spectroscopically with the FOS/RD and the two gratings G270H and G190H to see if the intervening rich clusters of galaxies produce resonance absorption lines. All targets will be observed with the FOS/RD and the low dispersion grating G160L to see if they have enough flux at short wavelengths to be used as probes of the line-of-sight medium in the far ultraviolet. Cycle 1 (1-6 months, SV)=Exposures 5,6,16,17 Cycle 2 (7-18 months)=Exposures 1,2,3,4,7,8,9,10 Cycle 3+4 (19-30 months)=Exposure 18 Parallel observations should be scheduled only if primary observations are taken in dark time. Parallel observations constitute background measurements for the proposal: "Imaging and Spectroscopy of a Complete Sample of Bright Nearby Quasars: I. Imaging (P.I. J. Bahcall). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. ST observations are required in order to observe at the ultraviolet wavelengths at which the resonant atomic absorption lines occur for the catalogued rich clusters of galaxies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. Parallel observations are useful only in dark time. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Data reduction and analysis of absorption lines will be performed on the DEC equipment available at the Institute for Advanced Study. Most of the continuum and emission line intensities will be determined at KPNO in conjunction with ground-based observations. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Additional comments or special requests. Need to measure more accurately the positions of quasars using existing plates. Also, need to measure the redshift of Abell 280. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10. Resources to be supplied by investigator's institution(s). Computing and research assistance will be provided as necessary. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 13.
