Abstract Observe Jupiter with the FOC for south polar auroral emissions by H2 at 1600 A, using two different filter-pairs. In each case, a filter-pair is used to reduce the red leak. This observation will serve as a test to determine which filter-pair produces the optimum signal, by maximizing throughput at auroral wavelengths and minimizing both near (1800-2000) and long (visible) wavelength contamination. Continuum observations, also with two different filter-pairs, will improve the accuracy of position-finding on Jupiter through detailed limb-fitting. At auroral wavelengths, auroral emission dominates continuum emission, making limb- fitting impossible. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. S/N estimate based on previous HST images, with FOC pixel binning to 2x2 (arcsec)^2 assumed. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. The south-polar observations should be completed as soon after February 1, 1993 as possible, both to improve planning future HST observations and to minimize Jupiter's motion in the sky. The latter will facilitate keep- the entire set of observations on one guide-star pair, which is essential for subsequently determining accurate auroral positions on Jupiter. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Images will be calibrated and binned as necessary to produce optimum information. Exposures are limited not only by photons but also by planetary rotation, so that standard S/N estimates are not meaningful. Previous experience with HST/FOC images of the Jovian aurora shows that the chosen exposure times will produce excellent images. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 13. Auroral imaging of the polar regions of Jupiter will be performed with the FOC, using either filters F140W and F152M or F175W and F152M in series, to reduce red leak and provide reasonable sensitivity to H2 emission at 1600 A.
