Abstract Overall program: UV and optical spectra of four supernova remnants (SNRs) will be used to study a number of problems related to abundances, grain destruction, interstellar medium properties and physical conditions in SNR shocks. Representatives of three of the main classes of SNRs (Crab-nebula like, Balmer-line and "normal") will be studied in the LMC, where reasonably low reddening permits UV observations. An oxygen-rich SNR in NGC 4449 will be observed, taking advantage of the small FOS slits to isolate the SNR from surrounding H II emission. Two M33 SNRs that were previously part of this proposal have been dropped due to time limitations. This proposal is augmented time to obtain early acq images of two LMC remnants and spectra of N49, which had early acq images in Cy. 0. NOTE: SPECTROSCOPY AND IMAGING ORIGINALLY IN THIS CYCLE 2 PROPOSAL HAVE BEEN SPLIT BY STSCI INTO TWO SEPARATE PROPOSALS TO ALLOW FOR SCHEDULING OF CYCLE 2 EARLY ACQ IMAGING ( FOR LATER CYCLES ) SINCE CYCLE 2 SPECTROSCOPY DEPENDS ON MEASUREMENT OF EARLY ACQ IMAGING OF OTHER TARGETS FROM EARLIER CYCLES. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. The spatial resolution provided by ST may resolve the emission of the three LMC SNRs into thin filaments. It will be necessary, therefore, to obtain short WFC exposures to permit exact positions for the FOS aperture to be chosen. The slit positions relative to offset stars (also chosen from the WFC images) will be measured and the FOS will be positioned by blind offset. A similar technique will be used to place a smaller FOS slit on the SNR in NGC4449. Each object will be observed with a sequence of gratings providing coverage from 1150-6800 A (thus overlapping with existing optical data). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. The SV prerequisite programs for all FOS observations in this program are: Prop ID 2195 FOS Target Acquisition Tests All observations Prop ID 1317 Int./Ext. Wavelength Offsets 1st target Prop ID 1318 Spectral Flat Fields 1st target Prop ID 1320 Absolute Spectrophotometry 1st visit of bright targets ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 12. The two M33 SNRs that have previously been part of this proposal have been dropped from the program due to the time limitations incurred because of the PSF problem. The other objects are interesting each in their own right, and while comparison of one object to another will be useful, the observations of each object define a viable investigation. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 13. UV and optical spectra of four extragalactic supernova remnants will be used to study a number of problems relating to abundances, interstellar medium properties, nucleosynthesis, grain destruction and physical conditions in the remnant shocks. Observations will be concentrated in the LMC, although the oxygen -rich remnant in NGC 4449 will also be observed. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
