Abstract This proposal is continuation of an exploratory survey of the redshifted Lyman continuum spectra of high redshift quasars using the FOC far-UV objective prisms (FOC/GTO 1235 and 3179). The main objective is to investigate the opacity of the intergalactic medium in the Lyman continuum and to carry out the He+ equivalent of the Gunn-Peterson test for once ionized intergalactic helium. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Description of proposed observations. FOC far-UV objective prism spectra of 15 Z>3 quasars will be observed in the standard `point and shoot' imaging mode. In order to optimize the signal-to-noise of the extracted spectra with respect to the variable detector and sky background - whilst avoiding the introduction of orbital scheduling constraints - the exposures of each target have been broken into three separate 15 minute exposures. Neither the precise duration (to within, say, 20%) nor the sequencing of the individual exposures is critical. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. The objective prism mode of the FOC is the fastest and operationally simplest far-ultraviolet spectroscopic mode available onboard ST. Hence it is ideally suited to carry out a first exploratory survey of the redshift Lyman continuum spectra of the highest redshift quasars. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Access to a varity of workstations running IRAF/STSDAS. Specialized software for reduction of FOC prism exposures is also available. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. This proposal is a direct continuation of the successful Cycle 0 FOC/GTO 1235 and Cycle 1 FOC/GTO 3179 proposals and utilizes an identical instrumental configuration and exposure sequence.
