Abstract CYCLE 2 test for routine monitoring of detector dark noise. This proposal will provide the primary means of checking on health of the GHRS detector systems through frequent monitoring of the background count rate. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. GENERAL FORM Proposal 4065c PI: Steve Hulbert Proposal Title: DARK NOISE MONITORING HRS ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1. Proposers: Proposers Institution Country ESA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Ronald L. Gilliland ST SCI USA Dave Soderblom ST SCI USA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. Engineering mode "Photoscan" can be used. An integration time of 10 seconds with 7 bins produces a readout every 70 seconds. 16 of these observations provides 18.7 minutes of dark count data. All deflection are 2048, 2048. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. Estimated observing time = 24 exposures x 18.67 minutes = 448 minutes = 7.47 hours. Guiding Tolerance: none - internal test only These are internal tests and do not require any special pointing of the telescope. They do not demand that HRS be prime instrument. It is hoped that HRS can be operated in a parallel mode, allowing these dark count monitors to be run very frequently. There is no carrousel motion. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Basically the same as for test HRS-i5, but with long term trend analysis and improvement of statistical accuracy as the main goals. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
