Abstract UV spectroscopy will be done at 2 x 10super4 resolution on the principal stellar wind lines of OB stars with mass-loss. Each star will be observed twice to study time changes in line profiles. Several stars are interacting binaries. These will also be observed at key binary phases to study phase dependent wind variations. Each set of observations to be taken in shortest time interval. Binary stars should be observed at phase requested, within 1 or 2 orbits. Intervals between epochs for each star should be >/= 4 weeks. All observations with G160M grating centered at wavelengths of interest. During R31 exposures WFC parallel observations requested with UV grating to study OB star population in SMC. Observations may be made in any cycle, subject to time constraints in exposure log. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. ST required to obtain resolution and S/N in UV. IUE data are too noisy for this investigation. Ground-based data not possible. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. Timing of observations is important to distinguish temporal and phase-related spectroscopic changes. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. Observations of different lines for each epoch of a star should be taken as close together in time as possible (same orbit or consecutive orbits), to provide simultaneous snapshots of the winds in all lines. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. UV line profiles will be compared with each other and with theoretical ones to analyze (1) smoothness of wind; (2) limitations of models; (3) temporal and phase -related changes; (4) ionization structure of wind fine-structure features. Weak features will be identified and analyzed in the same way. Interstellar lines should reveal faint components, of particular interest in SMC target. Appropriate analysis facilities and software exist at DAO. HRS 2 x E+4 resolution data will be obtained on principal stellar wind lines (NV, SiIV, CIV, NIV) in several OB supergiants.
