Abstract We will obtain low resolution FOS spectra of the high-redshift quasar 1208+101 and the brightest of two candidate gravitational lens images, located about .5 arcsec from the primary image. The 0.3 arcsec circular aperture will be used to spatially resolve the images, to test the gravitational lens hypothesis. Only HST can provide sufficient spatial resolution to permit sufficiently accurate spectrophotometry of the individual images. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Description of proposed observations. FOS/RD observations will be made with grating G650L and the 0.3 arcsec aperture of the two brightest sources associated with 1208+101. Exposure times of 10 and 38M will yield SNR, per 25A resolution element, of about 10. A similar spectrum of the sky, at a point opposite the fainter target from the brighter, will also be obtained, to permit accurate subtraction of the contribution of the brighter target PSF from the spectrum of the fainter. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. HST observations are required in order to resolve the components.
