Abstract This proposal defines the procedure for determining the instrumental polarization of the polarimetric IDT (IDT#1, POL) on the HSP. Two (2) unpolarized standard stars wil be observed using various filter-polarizer combinations. Two sets of observations will be taken at approx 30d and -30d to be followed approx 60 days later by two more sets of observations at +30d and -30d (for a total range of 120d). These observations will permit the instrumental polarization to be calibrated. The instrumental polarization must be determined to a high precision in order to vectoriallly remove it from HSP polarization observations to determine the actual astronomical polarization. Description of proposed observations. The proposed observations will use the polarimetric IDT (IDT#1, POL) configured in the digital, single aperture mode. The observations divide into two basic sequences (rolls and times are approximate. see section 5) I. Acquire the unpolarized star in the 6.1 arcsec finding aperture of IDT#1 (POL) with ST at the +30d roll angle. Offset the star to a selected filter-polarizer pair (F327M, E=0d) and integrate for requested exp time. Repeat the observation for the three other filter-polarizer positions in the order (E=45d, 90d, 135d). Repeat for the other filter-polarizer combinations (F277M, F237M, F216M, E=0d, 45d, 90d, 135d). Repeat both observations for one other ST roll angle (-30d from normal). Repeat the entire procedure for an additional star. II. 60 days later, with the ST at +30d from normal, acquire and observe the two (2) stars observed in (I) for all four filter-polarizer combinations in the order (F327M, F277M, F237M, F216M, E=0, 45, 90, 135d) integrating for one (1) minute at each position. Repeat the observations with the ST at a -30d roll from normal. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. The ST must be positioned at two special roll angles (-30d and +30d) from the normal position in order to perform the instrumental calibration procedures for this test. (See item 3) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Data reduction consists of determining the count rates through each filter- polarizer combination at each ST roll angle for each of the unpolarized stars observed The data analysis involves using the Fesenkov-Ohman analytical relations to calculate the percent polarization and the plane of polarization relative to the appropriate polarizer orientation from the count rates for each star. In addition, the count rates from observation of the same unpolarized star in different polarizer locations on the same filter will be used to derive the relative scale factors between the polarizers. These scale factors will be derived for all stars observed to confirm that they are independent of count rate. The values of the instrumental polarization parameters and the polarizer relative scale factors will be supplied to the Calibration Data Base (CDB).
