Abstract We will make a comprehensive study of the emission-line gas in the narrow-lined region (NLR) of active galactic nuclei (AGN). We will concentrate on Seyfert 2 galaxies in order to avoid possible confusion with the spectrum of the broad line region (BLR). We wish to use a wide variety of the HST instruments, to insure that a comprehensive and high-quality data set is built up for a representative sample of nearby Seyfert 2 galaxies. These data should immediately allow us to address several important, inter-related questions about AGN: a. What is the velocity field in the innermost part of the NLR? b. Where does the reddening occur in AGN? c. What is the chemical composition of the gas associated with the AGN? d. How do the Seyfert 1 and Seyfert 2 continuum sources differ? e. Do most Seyfert 2 galaxies contain "hidden" BLRs? We will exploit both the high UV response and high spatial resolution of HST, using PC images to map out the NLR structure in a few strong lines, FOS and HRS to obtain detailed nuclear spectra over a wide wavelength range, and most importantly, FOC in its long slit mode to study spatial variations in the UV and optical spectra. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Our goal is to make a comprehensive study of the Narrow Lined Region (NLR) of the seyfert galaxy NGC3393. Specifically, we were awarded HST time to try to answer the questions: a. Following our reassesment to take account of the spherical aberration problem, we had planned to use WFC, PC, FOS, and GHRS. The GHRS observations were requested on the expectation that most of the NLR emission would come from a nearly unresolved source coincident with the continuum nucleus, and that the best way to differentiate between general inflow or outflow in the NLR therefore would be to use high spectral resolution (e.g. GHRS) to look for asymmetries in the Ly-alpha emission profile. However, we now have obtained a series of short early acquisition exposures with WFC and PC. These very clearly show that the NLR emission comes from two regions which straddle the nucleus. There is no NLR emission from the nucleus itself. We therefore wish to abandon the GHRS observations, since they won't tell us anything, and instead use that spacecraft time to (1) take further PC exposures (in order to study this newly- discovered morphology at higher signal:noise), and (2) take FOS spectra of the brightest emission-line knot and also of the nuclear continuum source (since what we had previously thought was one target is now two targets). This revised observing plan will fit into exactly the same number of spacecraft hours as our previous (approved) observing plan, and will answer the exact same scientific questions that we were awarded HST time to answer. The change is needed in order to take into account what has been learned from the early acquisition exposures. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. The PC exposure times on lines 13-15 may be adjusted to make best use of spacecraft time. We are interested only in obtaining the total amount of exposure time specified for each filter, split into approximately the number of exposures indicated and avoiding very short exposures which would add only read noise. The WFC exposures on line 16, through filter F230W, should be taken just after a WFC decontamination. There is no need for them to be taken at the time as the images on lines 12-15, and in fact we would much prefer not to delay taking the other images just to wait for a decontamination. Accurate positions for the targets 3, 4 and 5 should be measured very soon now from existing PC images.
