Abstract We will determine the kinematics, ionization stratification, and spatial structure of the broad line region in the Seyfert galaxies MCG 2-58-22 and MCG 8-11-11. This will be accomplished by observing Lyman-alpha and C IV 1550 emission with the GHRS and with nearly simultaneous ground based observations of Hbeta and Halpha. Emission line fluxes and profiles will be analyzed and compared as a function of radial velocity to study how conditions change within the broad line region. Line ratios will also yield information about the photoionization conditions in the BLR including density and the ionization parameter. In addition, we will measure narrow line fluxes of several ultraviolet emission lines. Galactic halo and intergalactic absorption lines will also be searched for and analyzed. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Description of proposed observations. We will also observe Lyman-alpha at low resolution for MCG 2-58-22 and MCG 8-11- 11, and C IV 1550 for MCG 2-58-22. Cycle 2: Low Dispersion GHRS observations. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. Observations of MCG 2-58-22 and MCG 8-11-11 have been attempted with IUE, however, the spectral shape and faintness of the object have precluded obtaining data of sufficient quality for detailed line profile studies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. Individual wavelength calibrations are required to reduce the errors for intercomparison of line profiles between different grating settings and between HRS and ground based data. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7.
