Abstract The goals of this program are to determine the physical characteristics of the winds, chromospheres, photospheres and circumstellar shells around cool luminous stars. The profiles and velocities of chromospheric emission lines will be used to estimate temperatures, densities, turbulences, and flow velocities in these stellar chromospheres and winds. The (confusing) far UV spectrum of the M supergiants will be explored with the GHRS. Circumstellar absorption features seen against chromospheric emission and continua from the photosphere and chromosphere will be used to estimate the physical conditions in the circumstellar shells. An echelle scan of a mid-UV region of the Arcturus spectrum will be used to study the detailed composition of the photospheric and chromospheric spectra in that region, to separate the two, and to obtain improved constraints on the physical conditions in both regions. Medium resolution observations of Fe II and Mg II in the dusty, very luminous star Mu Cep will provide information on the effect of dust and very low gravity on the outer atmospheres of late-type stars. *** this file contains Cycle 2 and later observations only *** ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Four targets will be observed in Cycle 2 and later using a combination of baseline and augmented GTO time: Alpha Boo (K2 IIIp): fluorescence features, detailed Cycle 2 profiles of photospheric and chromospheric lines Alpha Ori (M2 Iab): far-UV region, concentration on Cycle 2 CO circumstellar absorption Mu Cep (M2 Iab): dusty M-supergiant, for comparison Cycle 3 with "normal" stars 119 Tau (M2 Iab): far-UV region, comparison to alpha Cycle 3 Ori, look for CO, O I, etc. These observation complement studies begun in Cycles 0 and 1 on Alpha Ori and Gamma Cru. The Alpha Ori observations are a consortium project. The 119 Tau observations are a team project. The Alpha Boo observations contain both Linsky & Carpenter programs (1.6 hours of the time is from Linsky). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. The data required for this program consists of UV spectra not obtainable from the ground. IUE has been used for a preliminary reconnaissance of all these targets. We now require the higher sensitivity, wavelength resolution, and S/N attainable with the HRS and ST to improve and extend our studies of the physical conditions characterising the outer atmospheres of these cool luminous stars. Only HRS is capable of providing us with the very high precision line profiles, fluxes, and absolute velocities required for our program. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. HD148478 has been deleted from the program and the following can be ignored for now: An interactive acquisition of HD148478 is required after the blind offset from HD148478-offset to ensure that the former target (i.e. the M-supergiant) will be properly located in the Small Science Aperture despite the presence of the nearby main-sequence B-star (HD148478-offset) and its scattered light and the uncertain orbital elements of the system. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. Wavelength calibration exposures for all the echelle observations are needed to provide us with a velocity scale accurate to about 1 km/sec. This accuracy is required to allow us to study the dependence of the wind flow velocities on distance above the photosphere of each star. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. The data will be reduced and analyzed primarily with in-house software developed for analysis of IUE data and with new software to be developed in-house. Software developed by the GHRS IDT and the proposers will be used in the reduction and analysis of these observations. The NLTE MULTI code will be used to construct model chromospheres and spectra which will be compared with the observations. References documenting the methods of analysis to be used in this investigation are given in the Scientific Justification section of this proposal.
