Abstract HRS low dispersion spectra and FOS high dispersion spectra wil be obtained in the UV to study stellar wind lines at selected orbital phases. In LMC X-4, these will be carried out at two precessional phases as well. The data will be used to study stellar wind ionisation and velocity changes with X-ray binary phase, and with variable accretion disk obscuration of X-rays. For LMC X-4, HRS low dispersion spectra will be taken at binary phases 0.3, 0.8, twice, at precession phases with maximum and minimum X-ray shielding of the primary. LMC X-1 will be observed at two binary phases with HRS at low dispersion. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. Only ST and HRS FOS can provide the S/N and spectral resolution for this study. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. Orbit and precession phasing is essential to the investigation. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. All data will be analyzed at DAO using spectroscopic software. Ongoing ground- based spectroscopy will update binary and precession ephemeris and monitor spectrum near to time of observation. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10. HRS spectra will be obtained at low resolution of LMC X-4, LMC X-1 at binary phases 0.3, 0.8 and repeated at LMC X-4 precession phases at maximum and minimum X-ray illumination of the primary.
