Beaver UC, SAN DIEGO USA (619) 534-1878 RESEARCH PHYSICIST ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Abstract FOS Spectra will be obtained of the Ly-alpha region of 3 quasars with 21 cm absorption, 3CR 196, PKS 1229-021, and 3CR 286. The absorbing object is almost certainly a galaxy disk in each case. Measurement of the damped Ly-alpha line will determine the H I column density in the 21 cm absorption system, and comparison with 21 cm will yield the spin temperature. The number of contributing components will be determined from existing or new 21 cm observations. Comparison with optical observations will allow the determination of chemical abundances with respect to H for elements with low-ionization lines. Images taken after the new WF/PC installation may identify the absorbing galaxy and, if so, will allow us to characterize the impact parameter and Hubble type of galaxies producing damped Ly- alpha absorption at moderate redshift. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Beaver UC, SAN DIEGO USA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. We will use the FOS at low resolution to observe Lyman-alpha absorption in two quasars with known 21-cm absorption. Observations will be with the 1.0" aperture and G160L. For 3CR 196, observations will be with the red detector. The blue detector will be used for PKS1229-021. Binary search will be used and spectra will have S/N of 10-20 at the L-alpha absorption. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. These measurements have been made in only a few objects with ground based observations. HST observations will double the number where spin temperature and column depth in a quasar absorption line cloud can be measured. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Data will be reduced and analyzed on UCSD computers. Convolutions of the instrumental profile and Voight function will be fit to the absorption line profile to determine the column density of H I. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Additional comments or special requests. We will arrange associated ground-based spectroscopy and photometry. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. Description of previous HST work. PI has received data from a number of GTO programs, SAT, and ERO programs. Related programs which have had observations are as follows: 1026 - ``UV Spectra of Low-Redshift-QSOs'': related, 1027 - ``UV Spectra of QSOs with z> 3.1'': not related, 1190 - ``FUV Emission LIne Profiles of W Serpentis Binaries'': not related Observations of UM 675 have shown that any He I Gunn--Peterson effect is small, that He I absorption lines are not strong, that predictions of the ``Lyman valley'' may be correct, and that low redshift Ly-alpha is more prevalent than expected. Observations of low redshift QSOs (including 3C 273) have shown even more clearly that Ly-alpha absorption occurs in greater numbers than expected, as well as showing emission--line profile differences more clearly than from earlier data. Unexpectedly, Ly-alpha is {\it narrower} than H-alpha. ``Far--Ultraviolet Spectroscopy of the Quasar UM 675 with the Faint Object Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope'', E.A.Beaver, E.M.Burbidge, R.D.Cohen, V.T.Junkkarinen, R.W.Lyons, E.I.Rosenblatt, G.F.Hartig, B.Margon, and A.F.Davidsen, {\it Ap.J.(Lett.)}, {\bf 377}, L1, 1991. ``First Results from the GHRS: UV Spectra of a Starburst Knot in NGCC 1068'', Hutchings, J.B., Bruhweiler, G.C., Boggess, A., Heap, S.R., Ebbets, D.C., Beaver, E., Rosenblatt, E., Truonmg, K.Q., Perez, M., and Westmacott, R., 1991, APJ (Letters), 377, 1991. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10.
