The high spatial line_3: resolving power of deconvolved HST images will be used to line_4: measure core structure parameters over a wide range of core line_5: size and luminosity. PC images in F555W will be taken of 45 line_6: galaxies covering a range of 9 magnitudes in luminosity. Ground- line_7: based photometry and kinematic data will be obtained to augment line_8: small-radii HST data. Observations will be used to constuct line_9: dynamical models of the core regions using a maximum-entropy line_10: technique with the particular goal of searching for BHs in line_11: selected galaxy candidates. Existing HST images of galaxy cores line_12: are revealing a wide variety of different types of structure line_13: including the prevalence of nuclear cusps. At the same time, line_14: ground-based data suggest that cores can retain information line_15: about merger processes and accretion events for up to Gyrs after line_16: they occur. In studying systematic core properties over a wide line_17: range of galaxies, we expect to learn much about how spheroidal line_18: galaxies were formed. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: FABER fname: SANDRA mi: M. inst: UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA country: USA ! lname: KORMENDY fname: JOHN inst: UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII country: USA ! lname: RICHSTONE fname: DOUGLAS mi: O. inst: UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN country: USA ! lname: TREMAINE fname: SCOTT mi: D. inst: UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO country: CANADA ! lname: DRESSLER fname: ALAN inst: CARNEGIE OBSERVATORIES country: USA ! lname: LAUER fname: TOD mi: R. inst: KITT PEAK NATIONAL OBSERVATORY country: USA ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 2 section: 1 line_1: F555W PC6 images of 45 representative eary-type galaxies and spheroidal line_2: bulges covering a range of 9 magnitudes in intrinsic luminosity are planned. line_3: Objects are centered at the newly defined aperture location PC6, to avoid line_4: the bad column near the center of PC6. Exposures are keyed to give 1300 DN line_5: in the central pixel for our present best guess at central surface line_6: brightness. A safety exposure of 1/4 nominal is added in uncertain cases to line_7: protect against saturation. line_9: Accurate PSFs are crucial to this program because the images will have line_10: high S/N and will be ideal for deconvolution. We are relying on the line_11: announced STScI weekly PSF monitoring program in F555W in P6 and have not line_12: included any PSF exposures in the present program. The galaxy exposures should line_13: be centered at the same location in P6 as the PSF monitor exposures. line_15: Long exposures are divided so as to provide appropriate CR splits. line_16: We have switched to fine lock to improve the guiding, but coarse track line_17: may be substituted if scheduling proves difficult. We will require line_18: jitter data to reconstruct the time-averaged PSFs. ! question: 3 section: 1 line_1: Most nuclei are unresolved from the ground and will benefit from the line_2: narrower PSF of HST. In those nuclei that are resolved, we are searching line_3: for sharp nuclear star clusters or power-law cusps that may have escaped line_4: detection from the ground. Existing HST images of galactic cores have line_5: revealed much important structure that could not be seen in ground-based line_6: images. ! question: 4 section: 1 line_1: Exposure times are based on measured on-orbit PC throughput plus line_2: estimates of the net surface brightness that will be observed with HST with line_3: spherical aberration taken into account. Times for most galaxies are adjusted line_4: to yield 1300 DN in the central pixel (S/N = 100). A safety exposure of line_5: 1/4 nominal is also included. For a small number of very low surface line_6: brightness galaxies, exposure times are less than nominal and the expected line_7: S/N will be reduced. ! question: 5 section: 1 line_1: None. ! question: 5 section: 2 line_1: For all galaxies, we require accurate PSFs, but these should be line_2: adequately provided by the weekly Observatory monitoring program in PC6/F555W. line_3: We also require jitter data for all images, plus accurate flat fields in line_4: F555W good to +/- 1% in the central 200x200 pixels of PC6 and 2% line_5: over the entire chip. ! question: 6 section: 1 line_1: PC images will be reduced and analyzed by Lauer and Kormendy. The line_2: team already has extensive experience with modelling HST galaxy images line_3: and has proven software routines for deconvolution, isophote fitting, line_4: and multiple-component fitting, as well as other options. Supporting line_5: ground-based data will be obtained by Dressler and Kormendy. Richstone and line_6: Tremaine will lead the dynamical modelling. Faber will oversee line_7: manuscript preparation and coordinate the team. ! question: 7 section: 1 line_1: All target coordinates have been verified with the STScI GASP system line_2: and are accurate to +/- 1". ! question: 8 section: 1 line_1: Faber and Lauer are members of the WFPC IDT. The IDT programs related line_2: to this proposal include 1118 (Nuclei of Galaxies), 1105 (Peculiar and line_3: Interacting Galaxies), and 1112 (Cores of Globular Clusters). ! question: 8 section: 2 line_1: GO 2600 has very good data on 19 galaxies. GTO programs 1105 and 1118 have line_2: returned images of a total of 8 galaxy nuclei, all of which have shown line_3: fascinating detail. A major finding so far is the high frequency of nuclear line_4: power-law cusps. ! question: 9 section: 1 line_1: Dressler: Carnegie provides ground-based data and workstation. line_3: Faber: WFPC IDT provides workstation.
