Faber CALIFORNIA, UNIVERSITY OF, S USA 408-459-2944 PROFESSOR ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Abstract We are conducting a comprehensive imaging survey of the cores of early-type galaxies and spiral bulges. The high spatial resolving power of deconvolved HST images will be used to measure core structure parameters over a wide range of core size and luminosity. PC images in F555W will be taken of 45 galaxies covering a range of 9 magnitudes in luminosity. Ground- based photometry and kinematic data will be obtained to augment small-radii HST data. Observations will be used to constuct dynamical models of the core regions using a maximum-entropy technique with the particular goal of searching for BHs in selected galaxy candidates. Existing HST images of galaxy cores are revealing a wide variety of different types of structure including the prevalence of nuclear cusps. At the same time, ground-based data suggest that cores can retain information about merger processes and accretion events for up to Gyrs after they occur. In studying systematic core properties over a wide range of galaxies, we expect to learn much about how spheroidal galaxies were formed. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Lauer KITT PEAK NATIONAL OBSERVATORY USA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 2. Scientific Justification. F555W PC6 images of 45 representative eary-type galaxies and spheroidal bulges covering a range of 9 magnitudes in intrinsic luminosity are planned. Objects are centered at the newly defined aperture location PC6, to avoid the bad column near the center of PC6. Exposures are keyed to give 1300 DN in the central pixel for our present best guess at central surface brightness. A safety exposure of 1/4 nominal is added in uncertain cases to protect against saturation. Accurate PSFs are crucial to this program because the images will have high S/N and will be ideal for deconvolution. We are relying on the announced STScI weekly PSF monitoring program in F555W in P6 and have not included any PSF exposures in the present program. The galaxy exposures should be centered at the same location in P6 as the PSF monitor exposures. Long exposures are divided so as to provide appropriate CR splits. We have switched to fine lock to improve the guiding, but coarse track may be substituted if scheduling proves difficult. We will require jitter data to reconstruct the time-averaged PSFs. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. Most nuclei are unresolved from the ground and will benefit from the narrower PSF of HST. In those nuclei that are resolved, we are searching for sharp nuclear star clusters or power-law cusps that may have escaped detection from the ground. Existing HST images of galactic cores have revealed much important structure that could not be seen in ground-based images. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. Exposure times are based on measured on-orbit PC throughput plus estimates of the net surface brightness that will be observed with HST with spherical aberration taken into account. Times for most galaxies are adjusted to yield 1300 DN in the central pixel (S/N = 100). A safety exposure of 1/4 nominal is also included. For a small number of very low surface brightness galaxies, exposure times are less than nominal and the expected S/N will be reduced. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. None. For all galaxies, we require accurate PSFs, but these should be adequately provided by the weekly Observatory monitoring program in PC6/F555W. We also require jitter data for all images, plus accurate flat fields in F555W good to +/- 1% in the central 200x200 pixels of PC6 and 2% over the entire chip. Page 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. PC images will be reduced and analyzed by Lauer and Kormendy. The team already has extensive experience with modelling HST galaxy images and has proven software routines for deconvolution, isophote fitting, and multiple-component fitting, as well as other options. Supporting ground-based data will be obtained by Dressler and Kormendy. Richstone and Tremaine will lead the dynamical modelling. Faber will oversee manuscript preparation and coordinate the team. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. All target coordinates have been verified with the STScI GASP system and are accurate to +/- 1". ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Additional comments or special requests. Faber and Lauer are members of the WFPC IDT. The IDT programs related to this proposal include 1118 (Nuclei of Galaxies), 1105 (Peculiar and Interacting Galaxies), and 1112 (Cores of Globular Clusters). GO 2600 has very good data on 19 galaxies. GTO programs 1105 and 1118 have returned images of a total of 8 galaxy nuclei, all of which have shown fascinating detail. A major finding so far is the high frequency of nuclear power-law cusps. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. Description of previous HST work.
