Abstract FOC/96 images of bright nearby ellipticals and spirals in 3 filters extending from V to UV will be obtained to study the stellar content and the shape of the nuclear region. Description of proposed observations. Cycle 2: FOC/96 F502M, F342W, and F275W exposures for each of the program galaxies, to obtain radial profiles and two color diagrams; FOC/96 F410M, deep F342W, F275W, F220W exposures for NGC 6251 to improve the wavelength coverage and the S/N ratio. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. The study of galaxy cores requires both the very high-resolution of HST and its capability to observe at short wavelengths, below the atmospheric cutoff. Ground based observations have shown that a significant fraction of all galaxies possess peculiar or decoupled cores, but have been unable to shed light on the origin and their nature due to their limited resolution. The extent to which ultraviolet excesses in elliptical galaxy interest the whole galaxy or are a more local phenomenon in the cores can also only be investigated with the HST. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans.
