GENERAL FORM Proposal 3865c PI: David B. Gallagher Proposal Title: JPL K-SPOT STABILITY TEST ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1. Proposers: Proposers Institution Country ESA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Pi David B. Gallagher JPL USA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. This proposal will take a series of K-SPOT exposures to investigate any possible K-spot location dependancy on number of steps in the pyramid rotation command. To accomplish this the WFPC microprocessor RAM subroutine which controls the movement of the pyramid rotator mechanism must be patched. The pyramid motor, now, is stepped 332 times to rotate from WFC to PC, or PC to WFC. The patch will cause the pyramid rotation motor to be stepped 340 times. - Four KSPOT exposures will be taken, two WFC and two PC to establish a "pre-patch" reference for the KSPOT positions (Exposure Lines 1 through 4). - The WFPC RAM program will be patched via stored commands. - The RAM patch *MUST* be verified by examining the RAM content as reported in the generic engineering downlink telemetry. If the RAM is not correctly patched then the WFPC *MUST* be safed from the ground during a generic forward link. A 4-6 hour gap has been allotted for the collection and evaluation of the RAM image from engineering telemetry, and for a Real-Time initiated safing if the need arises. (Exposure Line 5). - Three sets of four K- SPOT exposures are taken on alternate cameras(WFC and PC). The exposures are to be spaced by at least 30 minutes so as not to overheat the pyramid rotation motor. (Exposure Lines 6 through 17). - The RAM is to be re-patched with the original values which were altered in exposure line 5. The same engineering data collection, evaluation, and RT safing opportunity scenario as described for line 5 applies here as well. (Exposure Line 18) - Four K-SPOT images, two WFC, two PC, will be taken following the restoration of the original RAM program to be compared with the original baseline K-SPOT images. (Exposure lines 19 through 22). Note: In each of the pairs of exposure line specified for a given camera (eg. lines 1 and 2), it is intended that the second of each of these exposures produce a data readout from the CCDS which are opposite the camera selected by the positioning of the pyramid. This will produce K-SPOT images along the diagonals of the CCDS. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. NO OTHER WFPC ACTIVITIES MAY BE INTERLEAVED FROM THE START OF THE EXECUTION OF EXPOSURE LINE 5 THROUGH THE START OF EXECUTION OF EXPOSURE LINE 19. Special Note for SPSS: In order to achieve the required diagonal K-SPOT image frames, PMDB changes must be made to qelogsheet AFTER the calendar is created, but BEFORE an SMS is generated. For WFC exposure lines which contain the comment "READOUT ALL 4 PC CHIPS" change qelosgheet:config from WFC to PC after the calendar is generated. For PC exposure lines which contain the comment "READOUT ALL 4 WFC CHIPS" change qelosheet:config from PC to WFC after the calendar is generated. Note for SPSS: Special commanding instruction/activity linkage will be required (qgactinst:instr_name) for exposure lines 5 and 18. Generic return link engineering telemetry will be required to verify the integrety of the WFPC RAM patches performed on exposure lines 5 and 18. This proposal carries NO RT- ANALYSIS requirements, as the 5H +/-1H spacings are inserted to collect the WFPC RAM content from the generic return link engineering data. Generic forward service (uplink) opportunities will be used to safe the WFPC in the event that either of the two WFPC RAM verifications fail. This proposal carries NO REQUIRES UPLINK requirements, the use of a generic forward service during the 5H +/- 1 H spacings will be sufficient. The data obtained under this proposal will be reduced in the JPL data analysis facilities by J.Hester. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
