Abstract We propose to use the FOS to observe bright and luminous starburst knots within the inner 3 Kpc region of NGC 1068. The FOS G130H and G190H spectra of the knots will be modeled with our population synthesis code, which incorporates a new library of high dispersion IUE stellar spectra. The resulting models produce real spectra at a resolution of 0.25A. The use of this powerful new tool, in conjuntion with ~ 3A resolution data from the FOS and complementary ground-based data, will place strong constraints on the stellar ages and the star formation history in the knots. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Description of proposed observations. Target Acquisition Scenario: AN EARLY ACQuisition using the WF/PC is required to determine accurate positions for knots. The imagery will be acquired using the F336W filter. FOS Spectra: The FOS spectra will be obtained through 4.3x4.3 aperture for two targets (knot 1 and 4). Both G130H and G190H observations will be made for these targets (A total of 4 FOS exposures). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. The PI has already investigated the bright knots of NGC 1068 using the IUE. These results, form the the foundation of this proposal. Although we obtained reasonable results, better S/N data are needed to constrain age estimates for stars in the knots. This can only be done using HST. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. We require an assisted early acquisition using the WF/PC. This is needed to provide better coordinates for the knots. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. N/A ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Data will be reduced and analyzed using software at either NASA/GSFC or CUA that has already been developed. Resulting spectra will be compared with computed population synthesis models. Spectra obtained at DAO and KPNO will be combined to constrain older, luminous stars populations. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Additional comments or special requests. The HST observations are supported by ground-based observations at the Kitt Peak National Observatory and Dominion Astrophysical Observatory. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. Description of previous HST work. 3031 (ERO) - unrelated 3024 (SAT) - unrelated 3021 (SAT) - related 1171 (cycle0) - unrelated 1172 (cycle0) - related In these programs, the PI was a Co- Investigator. The PI is also involved in severeal other GHRS/GTO programs, but no data have been obtained as of this writing. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10. Resources to be supplied by investigator's institution(s). The PI and graduate students at CUA are actively working with members of the GHRS/IDT at NASA?GSFC with access to NASA computing facilities. The PI with graduate students have developed necessary theoretical models for proposed work. CUA also has ample coputing facilities (a cluster of VAX computers) and some of the same software as is available at NASA.
